Schedule Commitment

This position works a standard 40-hour workweek, Monday through Friday, and requires participation in an on-call rotation to respond to after-hours animal emergencies. When on call, officers must be available to respond by phone within five minutes and arrive on scene within 60 minutes of dispatch. Additional work outside of regular business hours may be required to support operational and public safety needs.

Pay Plan

This opportunity is non-exempt and on Pay Grade #7. The full Pay Grade Range is shown for growth and development opportunities within the grade. Salary determination is supported by budget availability and qualifications of the candidate to maintain internal equity.

Hiring Rate: $21.12

  • Min: $21.12
  • Mid: $25.87
  • Max: $30.62

Eligibility

Experience

The City of Coppell Animal Services Officers are required to be CJIS certified. Candidates must meet the requirements for CJIS access.

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Animal Control Officer Certification, or the ability to obtain within 120 days of hire
  • State of Texas Euthanasia Certification, or the ability to obtain within six months of hire
  • Valid State of Texas Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, required for continued employment

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of a variety of animals, including appropriate interaction, handling, and care techniques
  • Knowledge of animal immobilization and euthanasia techniques and related equipment, or the ability to learn and apply them
  • Knowledge of animal services ordinances, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures

Skills

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective, cooperative working relationships with coworkers and other stakeholders
  • Skill in tactful, courteous, and professional interaction with the public, including in stressful or sensitive situations
  • Skill in compiling, researching, and preparing reports, documentation, and written materials

Abilities

  • Ability to memorize and navigate streets, buildings, and landmarks
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply established laws, regulations, and procedures
  • Ability to think clearly and take effective action in hazardous, stressful, or unpredictable situations

  • Ability to safely handle injured, dying, or aggressive animals and prevent injury to self or others

As part of the Police Department, Coppells Animal Services Division is a dedicated team committed to protecting animal welfare, supporting public safety, and serving the community with compassion. Every day brings something new-from responding to stray and injured animals, wildlife concerns, and animal-related emergencies to educating residents on responsible pet ownership, enforcing animal ordinances, reuniting lost pets with their families, and helping adoptable animals find loving homes. Made up of an Animal Services Manager, Animal Services Supervisor, two Animal Services Officers, and a Kennel Technician, the team works together to build a safe, informed, and animal-friendly community where both people and pets can thrive.
