JOB SUMMARY:xc2xa0

Students will serve as Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Student Tutors with responsibilities that include, but are not limited to, one-on-one tutoring services and supporting small-group learning within the PBL curriculum. Duties involve assisting students with case analysis, clinical reasoning, integration of basic sciences, and development of effective learning strategies aligned with the PBL process. All tutoring and instructional activities are conducted under faculty supervision and in accordance with institutional guidelines.

The student tutor will provide academic support to students who are struggling or underperforming in PBL-related coursework through both one-on-one and small-group sessions as needed. Tutors may also lead or assist with PBL case debrief sessions, helping students review learning issues, clarify key concepts, and reinforce application of knowledge following case completion.

CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promote and uphold the mission and values of LECOM at all times;
  • Interact with faculty, students, and visitors in a friendly, professional, and respectful manner;
  • Maintain confidentiality, a professional appearance, and a positive demeanor;
  • Meet with assigned students on an as-needed basis and employ effective learning and study strategies aligned with the PBL process;
  • Provide individual and small-group tutoring to students assigned by the PBL Course Director, to improve academic performance and strengthen PBL skills;
  • Support the PBL curriculum by assisting with PBL case discussions, case debrief sessions, and integration of basic science and clinical concepts, under faculty supervision;
  • Communicate regularly with the PBL Course Director regarding student attendance at tutoring sessions, including students who fail to attend scheduled sessions, and performance outcomes to a level where tutoring is no longer required;
  • Report directly to the PBL Course Director and work collaboratively with PBL faculty as needed;
  • PBL Student Tutors are expected to work a minimum of 6 hours per week as demand necessitates and no more than 20 hours per week.
  • Submit weekly timesheets to the Administrative Assistant to Preclinical Education; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervising faculty or their designee to support efficient and effective daily operations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Must possess the required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • The student tutor must demonstrate the motor skills required of all LECOM medical school students as specified in the Health & Technical Standards section of the student handbook;
  • Maintaining an established work schedule;
  • Ability to be self-reliant and follow instructions;
  • Maintaining confidentiality of work-related information and materials;
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships;
  • The ability to accept work requests from other managers and supervisors respectfully and cooperatively and to independently answer such requests;
  • The ability to work cooperatively and collegially with others, consistent with a workplace of dignity and respect and EEO rules and regulations; and
  • The ability to devote full attention and energy to the important work of LECOM in a timely fashion;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and experience equivalent to: being a current LECOM student with a LECOM grade point average of 3.0 or higher and completion of at least the first semester of medical education at LECOM (students repeating the year do not qualify).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.xc2xa0 While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee must have the ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include ability to distinguish the nature of objects by using the eye.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Employee is responsible for performing duties in an environment that is free from discrimination, intimidation, coercion or harassment, including sexual harassment. Work is performed indoors in an office setting and outside of the office at local community outreach sites. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate.

SAFETY: Assists in the creation of a culture of safety and environmental protection by performing work safely in accordance with departmental safety procedures. Operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work conditions or practices to the supervisor.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT: Ensure compliance with the LECOM Computer and Network Usage Policy xe2x80x93 General Guidelines for Faculty and Staff.
