Job SummaryThis role manages department deliverables and provides leadership for the Los Angeles Chargers’ payroll function. Supports the Director of Payroll & Benefits in ensuring the company complies with rules and regulations for payroll-related matters. Fosters a strong sense of ownership among team members, resulting in an overall environment of internal control compliance. Ensures strict adherence to payroll policies and procedures and deadlines. Supports team and ensures the integrity of payroll records. Acts as a backup to the Director in their absence. The position reports to the Director of Payroll & Benefits. Duties/Responsibilities:·         Supports the Director to ensure payroll processing deadlines are met, the payroll records are accurate, and internal payroll policy/procedures are followed.·         Provides timely and accurate employee/employer tax-related reports, tax deposits/filings, and general ledger.·         Responsible for monitoring, updating, and testing payroll and timekeeping software systems, upgrades, patches, and program changes.·         Reviews garnishment, wage deductions, levies, and child support payment requests for compliance with federal and state laws.·         Reviews procedures to assist with adherence to internal controls; recommends improvements to controls as needed, based on best practices; fosters a strong control environment to ensure payroll integrity and confidentiality.·         Must maintain confidentiality of sensitive Human Resources and Payroll information.·         Supports the Director in the identification of payroll compliance rules, regulations, and procedures; works with all parties (internal and external) to ensure that the company complies promptly.·         Provides leadership, guidance, and mentoring to payroll staff through effective goal setting, performance management, and professional development.·         Recommends improvements and development strategies to improve department effectiveness and efficiency overall.·         Supports audits and ensures appropriate supporting documentation is provided to external auditors.·         Responds to inquiries from management regarding payroll results and special reporting requests.·         Works on special projects and addresses business and financial ramifications of significant and/or unusual transactions, as needed. Required Skills/Abilities:·         Attention to detail and accuracy.·         Extensive knowledge of multi-state payroll and applicable laws.·         Working knowledge of accounting principles and practices.·         Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.·         Needs to be well-organized, proactive, and detail-oriented.·         Strong communication skills, including the ability to work in a team environment, give honest, direct feedback, and are a solid verbal and written communicator.·         Upholds and furthers company culture and values.·         Solid time management skills, prioritizes appropriately, and meets deadlines.·         Copes well with change and maintains composure under pressure.·         Is accountable for results, approaches obstacles proactively, and looks for ways to resolve problems and issues. Education and Experience:·         A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, or equivalent work experience.·         Minimum of 5 years’ experience managing multi-state payroll.·         Strong understanding and experience with payroll systems, payroll processing, and compliance issues.
