Position Description
Advertised Job Summary
The Law Enforcement Officer II/Public Safety Sergeant provides law enforcement, security, and protection for the University of South Carolina Beaufort Community and property. Serves as the primary supervisor of a team of officers. These are certified police officers in accordance with SC Code of Laws 23-6-430, empowered with full arrest and police authority state wide. They enforce state laws and University rules and regulations.
Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience
Requires a bachelor's degree in a job related field and 4 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.
Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials
Must be certified by the SC Criminal Justice Academy as a class one law enforcement officer.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a combination of a high school education and experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Knowledge of modern law enforcement techniques and procedures/knowledge of how to collect and preserve evidence. Knowledge of legal rights of both suspects and law enforcement personnel, knowledge of the laws of SC, knowledge of the functions and inter relationships of other law enforcement agencies. Skill in operation of law enforcement vehicles, weapons, and communications equipment. Ability to transfer knowledge and expertise to other officers in a constructive and effective matrix, knowledge of police communications desk operations and process NCIC certification or ability to complete NCIC certification. Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures and research processes. Ability to prepare reports, analyze information and derive conclusions. Ability to coordinate with other agencies and departments. Ability to successfully complete investigative training. Must maintain current SC Criminal Justice Academy certification. Ability to effectively plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion to meet schedules and deadlines.

Job Duty
Patrols assigned area to prevent crime and detect violations of law and Policy / apprehends and arrests violators. Responds to complaints, reports of violations and requests for assistance. Keeps records and makes reports regarding all activities.. Serve as Sergeant and supervise all under rank officers on their respective shift.
Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 40 Job Duty
Establishes/maintains positive working relationships w/ other law enforcement agencies. Other related duties as requested. Assists with crime prevention measures and programs. Communicates with other team/shift sergeants to maintain cohesiveness within the department.
Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 20 Job Duty
Issues warnings and citations (criminal and internal disciplinary) to violators. Directs traffic and controls crowds. Testifies in court and other criminal and administrative proceedings to include prosecution of defendants in court. Process and documents crime scenes.

Conducts surveillance and performs undercover assignments. Collects and presents evidence to obtain and execute search and/or arrest warrants. Assists with dispatch operations.

Conducts follow up investigations and spreads workloads accordingly, creates and manages schedules of all assigned team members on their respective shift. Reviews incident reports daily while on duty. Serves as an "on-call" supervisor when their shift/team is on duty.
