The Patient Safety Consultant is responsible to assist the Patient Safety Manager in the development and implementation of patient safety/clinical risk initiatives throughout the enterprise to support a High Reliability Organization (HRO) Patient Safety culture of excellence. Specific focus will be toward the identification, review, and elimination of preventable medical errors and other factors that contribute to unexpected adverse patient outcomes and dissatisfaction. Works collaboratively with key stakeholders and leadership to identify and enhance patient safety practices. Provides on-going support, education, and facilitation to meet and exceed patient safety related regulatory and evidence-based practices, including the National Patient Safety Goals issued by The Joint Commission.

Skills and Abilities

Essential Technical/Motor Skills

  • Computer skills, advanced skills needed able to enter data into spreadsheets.
  • Knowledge and experience in utilizing performance improvement tools for statistical analysis and process improvement.

Interpersonal Skills

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to lead discussion in small and medium size diverse groups.

  • Conducts chart reviews to support Patient Relations in resolution of grievances.
  • Assists/facilitates in the RCA and FMEA process and action plan monitoring
  • Identifies patient safety/ risk issues either proactively or in response to event reports, collaborates with stakeholders to employ prevention and risk reduction strategies.
  • Demonstrates patient safety expertise and participates in Patient Safety, Risk, Quality and organizational activities and committees.
  • Assists in conducting patient safety/clinical risk assessments, including development and implementation of corrective action plans.
  • Assists in conducting research and gap analyses of organizational compliance with existing and proposed patient safety, regulatory standards/statutes and patient safety evidence based practices.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of patient safety education and training sessions, general orientation, and annual competency training as identified.
  • Provides patient safety/clinical risk education/resources in the management of patient related adverse events.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education

  • Registered Nurse from an school of nursing - Required

Work Experience

  • 5 Years - Clinical experience in an acute hospital/health care setting. - Required
  • Experience in quality, patient safety and / or risk processes which demonstrate critical thinking and management of complex situations. - Preferred

Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) - State Licensure/Or Compact State Licensure - State Licensure/Or Compact State Licensure in state, depending upon designated work location - Required Upon Hire
  • Driver''s License - Valid In State - If operating a motor vehicle for business purposes must have a valid and in state driver''s license - Required Upon Hire

  • Must be able to travel between various system facilities and off-site locations as needed. - Required
