Position Summary:

The Part time Student Success Coach provides year-round academic support services to Washtenaw Community College students to assist with academic success, retention and completion. This position promotes a positive learning experience for all students with a focus on growth mindset, intrusive coaching, and holistic student development.

Washtenaw Community College is launching the inaugural WCC Readiness Pathway Initiative - Foundation to Success for Accuplacer, an expanded bridge program focused on supporting high school and adult learners as they prepare for college-level coursework. This initiative is designed to increase equitable access to higher education and improve placement outcomes for students through targeted Accuplacer preparation.

Accuplacer Coaches will lead subject-specific workshops, provide individualized and group tutoring, and guide students through every phase of test preparation in reading, writing, and math. Coaches will play a critical role in helping students improve placement scores, increase confidence, and transition into credit-bearing courses that set them up for long-term academic success.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage an active student caseload which includes:
  • Proactive outreach to students through email, text message, and phone calls.
  • Developing supportive relationships through one-on-one coaching sessions.
  • Assists students develop academic and life skills such as time management, goal setting, prioritization, and organization.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of Expanded Bridge Program strategies and programs to maximize student success such as new student orientation programs, academic success workshops and other campus/community events.
  • Serve as a key member of a Success Team for assigned student caseload, and collaborate with designated counselors, advisors, faculty and staff to provide appropriate referrals and develop enhanced academic programs.
  • Act as a liaison with outside agencies within a case management model including referrals to help students in crisis with basic needs.
  • Utilize technology, including AI-enabled tools and software where appropriate, to support the effective performance of assigned duties, enhance productivity, improve communication and information management, support decision-making, and other responsibilities, while ensuring compliance with confidentiality requirements, institutional policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Hours/Schedule:

This is a part time position of approximately 25 hours per week, which may include evenings and weekends.

Work Environment:

Combination of remote and on campus-the successful candidate must have internet access and the appropriate technologies needed to successfully perform all duties of the position and meet expectations and deadlines. This is subject to change based on college operations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education/Student Affairs, Education, Math, English, Human Services, Social Work or other related human service field, or evidence of current enrollment in such graduate program.
  • Equivalent of at least two (2) years of demonstrated successful advising or mentoring experience at the post-secondary level.
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population including first generation students.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and writing skills to communicate effectively with various college and community publics.
  • Goal-oriented and highly organized with ability to independently manage multiple projects, motivated to engage in problem solving and persist despite setbacks.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching or tutoring reading, writing, or math.
  • Must be able to effectively manage high stress student issues and concerns.
  • Ability to properly handle confidential information, exercise discretion and good judgment.
  • Experience with computer software, database systems/tracking and preparing reports.
  • Ability to use workplace technology relevant to the position, including the capacity to learn and appropriately leverage emerging AI-supported tools. Ability to assess the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated content, maintain confidentiality, and apply sound judgment and ethical practices in the use of technology.

  • Experience working in a Community College setting.
  • Experience with case management, and/or intrusive advising/coaching approaches.
  • Experience designing and facilitating educational programs or workshops.
