The Philosophy Department in the College of Arts & Sciences at Syracuse University seeks a part-time instructor of Philosophy to teach the main lecture of PHI 171, Critical Thinking, a 3-credit class for Fall 2026 semester as supplemental teaching for a leave replacement.

Course Description: Presentation and evaluation of reasoning, including arguments, explanations, and the justification of decisions. Topics of current social and ethical interest will serve as examples, with one topic selected for extended study.

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined based on their per-credit rate history within the hiring department.

All course offerings are subject to funding availability and enrollment.

  • ABD or PhD in Philosophy

Responsibilities

The duties associated with the teaching assignment include:

  • Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
  • Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours of two hours per week.
  • Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
  • Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet with your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute. You must also notify the department chair or their designated contact of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.
  • Grading student assignments and exams in timely manner.
  • Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
  • Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
  • Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
