Job Title Part-Time Front Desk Associate of Alleghany Center Job Description

The Part-Time Front Desk Associate at the Alleghany Center serves as the first point of contact for visitors, students, and staff, providing professional customer service and ensuring a safe, welcoming, and well-organized environment. This role is responsible for front desk operations, facility oversight, and general administrative support for Wilkes Community College (WCC) and the Blue Ridge Business Development Center (BDC). The position also provides administrative support to Workforce Development and Community Education (WDCE) programs, assisting with course coordination, student registration, and promotional efforts.

The Alleghany Center is located in Sparta, NC.

Full Time or Part Time Part Time Essential Duties Summary

Standard Hours: 10:30 am to 6:00 pm with a 30-minute lunch, with occasional modifications based on special events.

  • Monitor building entrances for safety and security.
  • Greet and direct visitors, students, and staff in a professional and welcoming manner.
  • Answer and route incoming calls for Wilkes Community College (WCC) and the Blue Ridge Business Development Center (BDC), providing accurate information as appropriate.
  • Oversee and maintain the shared lobby area to ensure a clean, orderly, and professional environment.
  • Manage classroom access and assist with room setup as needed.
  • Provide support to instructors, including basic technology assistance, copying, and administrative needs.
  • Coordinate scheduling for the BDC conference room and maintain the meeting room calendar and documentation.
  • Perform general office and clerical duties as assigned.
  • Monitor the cleanliness and orderliness of Student Commons, WCC classrooms, and the BDC conference room.
  • Follow established procedures to secure the building at the end of each shift

Workforce Development & Community Education (WDCE) Support:

  • Provide administrative and data management support for WDCE operations.
  • Assist in coordinating WDCE courses, including instructor schedules, classroom assignments, and required materials and supplies.
  • Create and distribute promotional materials, including flyers and social media posts, for upcoming courses and events.
  • Process WDCE registrations and maintain required documentation, including instructor contracts, class rosters, evaluations, payroll records, travel documentation, and certification materials in coordination with the Records Manager.
  • Request and manage Learning Management System (LMS) course shells, enroll students, and generate attendance and grading reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Demonstrated excellent customer service skills, with the ability to interact with students, employees, and visitors in a professional, courteous, and welcoming manner, both in person and by telephone.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including effective and professional email communication.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, prioritize responsibilities, and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with a strong work ethic; dependable, reliable, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

Associates degree in a related field.

Physical Demands

Work is primarily performed under general supervision in an office setting with appropriate climate controls. Requires the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations. Requires strong written and verbal communication, administrative, and organizational skills. Must be able to work under pressure and handle all confidential matters with discretion. Travel, evening, and weekend work will be required.

Mental Application: Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability, and creative problem-solving skills are important.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Essential functions of this position require lifting, manual dexterity, the ability to communicate, reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

Medium work: Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 5 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting for long periods.
