The Setnor School of Music within the College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks a Part-Time Instructor to teach MTC 145/146 M002/M003 Theory & Musicianship I and II during the Fall and Spring semesters, 2026-27. There are 2 sections offered in the fall and 2 sections offered in the spring.
MTC 145 - Instruction of music fundamentals: elementary counterpoint, basic principles of diatonic harmony, voice leading and analysis, all diatonic triads, and their inversions.
MTC 146 - Instruction of diatonic harmony and voice leading continued from MTC145 - Theory & Musicianship I: seventh chords, non-harmonic tones, common chord modulation, melody harmonization, and analysis of music literature. Primarily for music majors.

Qualifications
Relevant academic credentials and experience including:
- Minimum of a Master of Music (preferred), or demonstrable equivalent professional experience.
- Demonstrated successful college-level music theory teaching experience is strongly preferred.
- Teach the first and second semesters of a two-semester course sequence of freshman music theory.
- Develop and/or update a class syllabus.
- Prepare lectures, projects, or other student assignments.
Job Specific Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of music theory and how it applies to practical music making (performance and analysis, composition, arranging).
- Dynamic presence and teaching style.
- Ability to provide engaging lectures, work with Blackboard, and supervise student assignments, in-class activities, projects, and exams.
- Preference will be given to applicants who are able to fulfill multiple positions within the Setnor School of Music.
Responsibilities
- Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.
- Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.
- Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
- Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
- Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute. You must also notify the department chair of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.
- Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
- Grading student assignments and exams in timely manner.
- Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
- Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
