The School of Design within the College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks a Part-Time Instructor to teach DES 320 Wondering the Alphabet, a three credit hour course, during the Fall semester, 2026.

Teach one section: A unique look into the English alphabet. This interesting collection of lectures and assignments reveals personal relationships of sounds and shapes the alphabet offers. Students explore creative writing and typographic communication in an unusual design context.

This position is part of a bargaining unit and is represented by the union SEIU, Local 200United.

Qualifications

  • MFA or terminal degree in Visual Communication.
  • Industry related work experience.

Job Specific Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of typography and the origins of language, with a proven record of successfully teaching these subjects at the college level.

Responsibilities

  • Teach one section weekly on Mondays from 2:15-4:55pm.

In addition:

  • Develop and/or update a class syllabus.
  • Prepare lectures, projects, and/or other student assignments.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours.
  • Present instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
  • Meet during all designated class periods.
  • If unable to meet the class due to illness or emergency, reschedule or obtain a substitute.
  • Notify the department chair of any absence and plan to cover the class.
  • Submit completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.
  • Grade student assignments and exams in timely manner.
  • Provide departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
  • Build a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
