ABOUT

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The primary function of the Tyler Junior College Cheerleading Squad is to serve as a visible and positive presence that promotes school spirit at home athletic events and campus activities. This position plays a key role in fostering meaningful connections between the cheer squad, athletic teams, spectators, and guests.

The Cheer Assistant supports the overall operations of the TJC cheer program. Responsibilities include assisting with team coordination, event preparation, and game-day activities. The role requires strong collaboration with the Head Cheer Coach, as well as engagement with students and the campus community.

This position requires flexibility, including availability to work evenings and weekends to support games, practices, and special events. The Cheer Assistant reports directly to the Head Coach of the TJC Cheerleaders.

Part-time positions are subject to a maximum of 18 hours per week.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Provide support to the cheer team and staff at events and game days
  • Promote the TJC Cheerleading program to the public and recruit through community service
  • Maintain the TJC Cheerleading website and social media accounts
  • Actively participating in college activities which lead to student recruitment, retention and completion
  • Travel with the squad to and from events as needed, including but not limited to out-of-town, athletic events, cheer camps, performances and competitions
  • Assist with tryouts to select new members of the squad each Spring
  • Assist with fundraising activities
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies and uniforms and place orders, as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Individual Contributor

Work Environment: Indoor office and outdoor setting. Work may be required outside of normal business hours.

Physical Demands: Sitting, walking, standing, bending, reaching, lifting & pushing up to 50 lbs, and regular stair climbing.

Travel Required: Yes, traveling with the squad to and from events as needed, including but not limited to out-of-town athletic events, cheer camps, performances, and competitions

If travel is required, the candidate must have and maintain a current, valid Texas driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

WHO YOU ARE

Required Education

High School Diploma or equivalent

Required Experience

  • Experience in the areas of cheerleading and/or Student Life
  • Ability to demonstrate, teach, and critique the technical skills associated with a collegiate cheer/dance team.

Required Credentials/Licensures

USA Cheer Certification

Additional Job-Specific Requirements

  • Understanding of college student development and knowledge of current trends in cheerleading.
  • Demonstrate organizational and planning skills; experience advising student organizations or related skills.
  • Part-time employees are allowed to work a maximum of eighteen (18) hours per week and cannot work in multiple hourly positions. A work week is Monday-Sunday.

RETIREMENT

Part-Time Retirement

Part-time employees are required to participate in the part-time retirement fund. The retirement fund is invested in a group fixed annuity contract with Ohio National Life Insurance Company. The plan will provide you and your beneficiary with fully vested cash settlement or income benefits after termination of employment for any reason.

Free admission to regular season College sporting events for employees and immediate family.

Free admission for two to most cultural arts events on campus.

Library Use

Employees may utilize the Vaughn Library and Learning Resource Center.

Fitness Facility Use

Employee and immediate family use of the Apache Recreation Center - an indoor weight and exercise center, 18-hole disc golf course, covered basketball course, and outdoor ping-pong table and cornhole. The cost is $5 per ID.
