Job Description Summary

Shawnee State University seeks a highly motivated and student-focused Assistant Women's Basketball Coach to assist in all aspects of the women's basketball program. This position supports the Head Women's Basketball Coach in promoting competitive success, academic achievement, student-athlete development, and compliance with all university, conference, and NCAA Division II regulations.The Assistant Women's Basketball Coach is expected to positively represent Shawnee State University and contribute to the overall mission and culture of the Department of Athletics.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

Coaching and Player Development

  • Assist with planning, organizing, and conducting team practices, workouts, and conditioning sessions
  • Provide instruction in skill development, offensive and defensive systems, and player fundamentals
  • Assist with game preparation, scouting reports, film breakdown, and opponent analysis
  • Support in-game coaching responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach
  • Monitor and encourage the physical, mental, and personal development of student-athletes
  • Promote a positive team culture centered on accountability, discipline, sportsmanship, and leadership

Recruiting

  • Identify, evaluate, and recruit prospective student-athletes who align with the university's academic and athletic standards
  • Build and maintain relationships with high school, AAU, and junior college coaches
  • Assist with recruiting communications, including phone calls, emails, social media, and campus visits
  • Attend recruiting events, showcases, camps, and tournaments
  • Maintain recruiting databases and assist with organization of recruiting materials and evaluations

Student-Athlete Support

  • Encourage academic success and monitor student-athlete academic progress
  • Support retention, engagement, and overall student-athlete well-being
  • Serve as a mentor and positive role model for student-athletes
  • Reinforce departmental expectations regarding conduct, sportsmanship, and professionalism

Operations and Administration

  • Assist with team travel coordination, equipment management, and practice planning
  • Help oversee camps, clinics, fundraising initiatives, and community outreach activities
  • Assist with social media content, program promotion, and alumni engagement
  • Coordinate film exchange, statistical analysis, and other basketball operations tasks as assigned
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Women's Basketball Coach or Director of Athletics

Compliance and University Expectations

  • Adhere to all Shawnee State University, conference, and NCAA Division II rules and regulations
  • Maintain required certifications and complete all mandatory institutional training
  • Support departmental initiatives, policies, and operational best practices
  • Demonstrate professionalism and collaborate effectively with campus partners, athletic staff, and university personnel

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel as required

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to demonstrate basketball techniques and actively participate in practices
  • Ability to travel and work extended hours during practices, games, and recruiting events
  • Ability to lift and move equipment associated with basketball operations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous collegiate coaching or recruiting experience
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division II rules and regulations
  • Experience with film breakdown software, scouting platforms, and player development technology
