Description
The Sioux City Parks and Recreation Department is hiring part-time Parks and Recreation Specialists to help lead operations at the Expo Center. If youre self-directed, dependable, and thrive in dynamic environments, this could be the role for you.
What Youll Do As a Parks and Recreation Specialist - Youll be at the center of our facility operations. From overseeing daily activities to guiding staff during public hours and special events, your leadership will help shape memorable experiences for the community. Responsibilities include:
Flexible Hours - This role offers up to 15 hours a week, primarily on weeknights and weekends. Shifts may vary and are ideal for those who prefer variety in their schedule.
Perks That Matter - Although part-time, this position qualifies for pension benefits through the Iowa Public Employees Retirement System (IPERS).
Location Requirement - Employees must reside within (30) thirty miles of Sioux City city limits, including nearby areas in Iowa, Nebraska, or South Dakota.
Eligibility - Must be at least 18 years old at the time of application. Able to work independently and with reliability.

Cognitive Demands, Skills and Abilities: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to create, organize, and maintain accurate records and follow prescribed cash handling procedures; ability to coordinate personnel and programs; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the guests and staff; ability to communicate with guests, supervisors, and co-workers in a positive, friendly manner both orally and in written form; ability to be diplomatic and pleasant under stressful conditions; ability to identify and understand the speech of another person; ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
Job Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of the equipment and techniques necessary to successfully oversee all facets of the facility; knowledge of first aid methods and necessary safety precautions to be used in public work; ability to coordinate multiple events and multi-task; knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, this includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction; knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words and rules of composition and grammar.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to customers (external and internal); ability to write and speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees and the general public as to understand; ability to read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; ability to issue, and follow, verbal and written instructions; ability to work as a member of a team in order to accomplish tasks; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
Physical Requirements: The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; taste or smell; ability to quickly move hands, hands together with arms, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects; ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time; this involving moderate levels of muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue; ability for repeated use of abdominal and lower back muscles to support operational tasks throughout the duration of a shift; ability to quickly and repeatedly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with body, arms, and/or legs;ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer); ability to see details at a distance.
Regularly lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 30 pounds.
Work Environment: Work is equally performed outdoors year-round, and inside a recreation facility environment with appropriate heating and cooling and is subject to potential occupational or environmental hazards commonly associated with working in outdoor recreation; occasionally works with commercial food preparation equipment with related exposure to hot grease, food warmers, beverage dispensers, refrigerators, freezers and a variety of electrical appliances with potential to electric shock, cooking fumes and odors and hot grease; noise level in the workplace is usually moderate; may occasionally work in outside weather conditions with regular exposure to cold, often below zero degrees and low wind chill. Schedules/hours may every day to day, ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Graduation from High School; must be 18 years of age or older and one (1) year of related work experience in recreation, supervision of staff, or building maintenance experience.
