Park Services Officer Aide (Part-Time/Unbenefited)

$26.7563 - $34.1485 an hour

Do you enjoy working outdoors and providing excellent customer service? Join our team as a Parks Services Officer Aide! This part-time role offers an opportunity to work in beautiful outdoor settings, assist park visitors, and support the maintenance and operations of our parks.

As a Park Services Officer Aide, you will:

  • Drive to different park locations and assist in the daily operations and maintenance of park facilities and grounds.
  • Report unsafe conditions, incidents of vandalism, and other related conditions.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to park visitors, answering questions, providing information, and first aid to ill or injured visitors.
  • Tactfully and effectively enforce park rules, issue warnings and citations.
  • Participate in various park programs and events.
  • Perform routine tasks such as litter collection, restroom cleaning, weeding, watering and trail maintenance.
  • Learn and apply new skills related to park operations and maintenance.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate loves working outdoors in various weather conditions, possesses strong customer service skills and a friendly, approachable demeanor, is flexible and willing to learn new tasks and skills, and can work independently and as part of a team. Basic knowledge of park operations and maintenance is a plus but not required.

Work Schedule: This is a 20-24-hour per week position. The regular work schedule is Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; weekend work may be occasionally required. This position is limited to up to 1000 hours per year. However, employment might end sooner, depending on the needs of the hiring department. Extra-help positions are paid hourly and are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the extra-help assignment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Actively engage with the public to provide excellent customer service, anticipate customer needs and deliver services in a timely and respectful manner.
  • Patrols parks or trails and other public recreational area.
  • Provide information and direct visitors to appropriate park areas.
  • Develop and participate in interpretive programs.
  • Report unsafe conditions, incidents of vandalism, and other related conditions.
  • Interpret and apply oral or written material/instructions.
  • Prepare reports and maintain records of activities; may make recommendations on relevant subjects such as modifications to equipment or facilities to reduce vandalism or improve safety.
  • Tactfully and effectively enforce rules and regulations governing facilities. Issue warnings and code citations, directs traffic, enforce park rules as necessary.
  • Assist ill or injured park visitors until proper medical aid arrives.
  • Operate a motor vehicle or motorized maintenance equipment.
  • Conduct light maintenance activities (e.g., repairing, making and installing signs, fences, etc.).
  • Perform watering, weeding, pesticide applications, pruning, trash control and perform minor repairs and custodial maintenance.
  • Operate light motorized equipment including, but not limited to, pick-up trucks, dump trucks, power mowers, sprayers and tractors.
  • Ensure compliance with park rules, codes and ordinances.
  • Work weekends, holidays, or other irregular hours.
  • May direct the work of other employees on an intermittent or project basis.
  • May direct the work of volunteer service organizations on an intermittent or project basis.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and ability is qualifying.

  • Candidates selected for this position must have a valid California drivers license or equivalent and be at least 18 years old on the hire date.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Policies, procedures, and safety regulations related to the assigned park location; safety hazards and equipment related to park and open space environments; and driving and operating automobiles and light trucks.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Customer service principles.
  • Municipal codes, policies, and regulations about using public parks and trails.
  • Essential techniques, tools, and equipment used in park maintenance and management. Principles and practices of first aid and safety.
  • Methods and materials used in park interpretive programs.
  • Principles and practices of park management and general law enforcement.
