General Description

The City of Green Bay is accepting applications to fill Park Maintenance Worker vacancies and create an eligibility pool of candidates to fill future vacancies.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent teamwork skills, the ability to work without direct supervision, the desire to work in varying outdoor environments, and possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform various cleaning, grounds and equipment maintenance, and mechanical duties.

Dont have a Commercial Drivers License? No Problem, We can train you!

The work schedules for current vacancies are as follows:

Vacancy #1: Monday - Friday, 6:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. with rotating weekends from 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Vacancy #2: Monday - Friday, 2:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. with rotating weekends. Rotating weekends also include 2:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. shifts during summer months.

Examples of Duties

  • Operates/drives trucks and equipment of various sizes to haul, load and unload materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Performs routine maintenance of equipment and vehicles such as re-fueling, changing tires, oils and filters, checking batteries, lights and engine fluids, greasing equipment, sharpening mower blades and other related equipment care procedures.
  • Cleans equipment, vehicles and other property as directed.
  • Assembles or assists in assembling playground equipment, fences, hockey rinks, bandstands, stages and other items.
  • Performs turf maintenance work including mowing, watering, fertilizing, pesticide application, grading, seeding, sodding, trimming, etc.
  • Collects leaves and grass clippings including the annual spring park clean up.
  • Opens and closes park facilities and inspects the security of same including the Park Shop complex.
  • Cleans and provides supplies for park shelters and bathroom facilities. Picks up garbage, trash, and litter from all park areas.
  • Plants, prunes and weeds trees, shrubs, flowers and bulbs.
  • Performs winter maintenance including flooding ice rinks, plowing, sweeping and shoveling snow from walks, drives and rinks.
  • Assembles, repairs, and paints benches, tables, barrels and other park equipment.
  • Puts up and takes down Bay Beach Amusement Park rides.
  • Maintains ball diamonds and fields.
  • Reports defective or dangerous equipment or conditions to supervisors.
  • Keeps accurate daily records as instructed.
  • Trains new staff and seasonal maintenance employees as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years maintenance experience, including the operation of trucks and equipment.
  • Park maintenance experience desirable.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license with a good driving record and the ability to obtain CDL endorsement within six months.

A combination of equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of park maintenance practices and procedures, including equipment maintenance. Knowledge of safety practices related to truck driving and equipment operation. Knowledge of washing, lubricating, cleaning and other general equipment maintenance work.
  • Skills and knowledge of building cleaning and maintenance. Skill and ability to operate and maintain Department equipment and tools. Skill and ability to keep routine records.
  • Considerable ability in following oral directions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to work the required hours of the position.

May be required to demonstrate minimum competency by successfully passing approved tests.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to perform the following activities:

  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, stooping and lifting.
  • Ability to focus on projects for long periods of time.
  • Ability to reach and climb.
  • Ability to work in varied environmental conditions.
