THE POSITION

Douglas County Parks - Coastal Area Parks

Full time position available with competitive full-family benefit package.

PERS/OPSRP retirement and availability of deferred compensation retirement savings.

Full time exempt position. Includes excellent benefit package, including medical/vision/dental/long-term disability/basic life coverage and County-paid PERS retirement after required waiting periods.

Onsite (Courthouse complex) childcare available at a discounted employee rate through Roseburg Professional Childcare (Fowler St. location only). Availability is subject to center waitlist.

Job Summary:

This position performs duties in corrective and preventative maintenance, construction and repair of county parks, grounds and equipment; participate in construction of structures; pour and finish cement; paint; install and maintain water and irrigation systems; basic electrical work.

Essential Functions:

This is not an exhaustive or all-inclusive list of responsibilities, skills, duties or functions associated with the job.

  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance work at parks, which includes: construct structures. porches, boat ramps, sidewalks, curbs, signs; paint buildings, signs, tables, fences; spread rock, soil, bark mulch; install and maintain water and sewer systems; install and services irrigation systems; basic electrical work; repair playground equipment; clean boat ramps and restrooms, restock restrooms.
  • Provide a variety of groundskeeping and landscaping duties, such as; plant, cultivate, mow, fertilize, spray, prune, vacuum and/or blow grass and leaves.
  • Operate hand power tools and light to heavy equipment. These may include: mower, dump, flatbed, or garbage trucks; tractor; backhoe; trencher; sweeper; cat. Perform minor maintenance and repair equipment and machinery.
  • Move picnic tables and equipment form area to area. Provide garbage pickup for parks.
  • Winterize parks at season end; prepare parks for spring opening.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities required, will be considered. however, the following is preferred:

  • Three years progressively responsible work experience in park construction and maintenance, heavy equipment operation, and/or building construction which affords work experience in plumbing, irrigation, painting, roofing, cement work, electrical, and grounds maintenance areas.

Knowledge of: Considerable knowledge of grounds maintenance, irrigation systems, building and facility construction and maintenance methods, principles, practices, equipment, and materials as applied to park maintenance and development; reasonable knowledge of Oregon specialty codes that govern building and plumbing construction; reasonable knowledge of operation, maintenance and minor repair of assigned equipment and machinery. Ability to: Safely operate appropriate power tools and equipment. Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms; read blueprints and layout sketches; estimate time and materials for individual projects and manage time efficiently; maintain recordkeeping; utilize problem identification and resolutions techniques; remain calm and use good judgement during confrontational or high pressure situations; courteously meet and deal effectively with other employees and the public.

SCREENING & EVALUATION

Background Investigation: While not part of initial applicant screening, the finalist for this position may be required to pass a criminal history background check as part of a contingent offer of employment. Conviction of a crime may not necessarily disqualify an individual from employment.

Physical Examination / Drug Screen: Employment is contingent upon a pre-employment drug screen. Presence of non-prescribed drugs, including marijuana, on drug screen results will result in disqualification pursuant to the Countys drug and alcohol policy. To determine if physically qualified to perform essential functions, employment offer is conditional upon satisfactory results of a post-offer medical and hearing exam conducted at county expense.

Driving Requirements: Position requires driving. Finalist will be required to provide a driving history that meets the Douglas County Driver Policy as part of contingent offer of employment.
