SUMMARY
Under general direction, this position supervises, leads, instructs, trains and assists multiple crews that perform skilled and semi-skilled job assignments with minimal supervision. Duties include the care and keeping of the City athletic fields and facilities.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervises crews, technicians, utility workers and seasonal employees; trains, evaluates and assist supervisor in administering disciplinary actions as appropriate.
- Oversee the grounds keeping, maintenance and repair of City athletic fields and facilities.
- Purchases or submits purchase requests for needed materials, equipment, tools and supplies.
- Maintains irrigation systems.
- Trains all employees in the section on the proper and safe use of all equipment and tools that they use in their daily work, and monitors compliance with safety guidelines.
- Actively monitors the assigned facilities and uses judgment when areas of concern are identified; consults supervisor regarding the appropriate action to be taken.
- Works with the supervisor in planning upcoming projects, and establishing an understanding of the desired outcome, time frame, and manner in which the project is to be completed.
- Operates and oversees a crew that operates baseball field grooming equipment including laser grading equipment, robot field marking equipment, robot mowers, tractors, front end loaders, dump trucks, seeders, fertilizer spreaders, top dress material spreaders.
- Maintains a list of tools and supplies that will be proposed for purchase at the time of annual budget approval.
- Makes application of fertilizer and herbicides on all athletic fields and facilities.
- Inspects parks or facilities regularly and writes daily job sheets.
- Responding to complaints or hazards that are called in by a citizen or another City employee gives priority to hazardous situations like broken field equipment or hazardous playing conditions.
- Accounts for all City property assigned to the crews and participates in inventories as assigned.
- Uses a credit card with a limit of $3,000 for routine purchase of supplies.
- Oversee the upkeep/maintenance of all plumbing and mechanical systems at athletic facilities.
- While in the field, connects to the City of Amarillo's Network to upload data and download and write reports of accidents, prepare employee documentation of various types, compose emails to personnel of other departments and communicate with the supervisors on various matters.
- Performs quality assurance checks and inspections to ensure that workmanship meets expectations and standards.
- Receives and responds to work orders and follows instructions given orally and/or in writing.
- Issues instructions to the crew in a clear, concise and understandable manner.
- Effectively communicates with supervisors, subordinates, fellow employees and the general public.
- Controls, monitors and makes adjustments to work plans and assignments to achieve the desired final results for a specified project.
- Accounts for and maintains assigned tools, materials and equipment.
- Maintains safe working environment through compliance with occupational safety rules and practices.
- Completes daily job reports and other reports as needed.
- Operates machinery, equipment or vehicles and instructs others in their safe and appropriate use.
- Performs manual work to assist in the performance of various tasks.
- Takes 24-hour calls on a rotating schedule.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of three years of experience in athletic field maintenance or a related field. Must be able to obtain a Pesticide Applicator License within 1 year of employment. Valid Class A Texas Driver's License required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing.
- Strong verbal and written communication skill.
- Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
- Knowledge of and ability to skillfully operate and occasionally repair aerial lift trucks, skid loaders, front end loaders, and small tractors with various implements such as tillers, plows, discs, and snow removal blade.
- Knowledge of water irrigation methods and equipment.
- Knowledge of proper handling of and safety procedures for storage of pesticides, herbicides and other hazardous chemicals.
