Overview

The NREMT Paramedic provides Advanced Life Support (ALS), emergency medical response, patient assessment, stabilization, treatment, and medical transport support for the Ascension Island medical clinic and emergency medical services operations under the V2X program. The incumbent supports 24/7 emergency medical readiness and response capability for the Ascension Auxiliary Airfield (AAAF) mission within a remote and austere operational environment.

The NREMT Paramedic responds to medical emergencies across Ascension Island and supports emergency medical operations involving U.S. military personnel, contractors, civilians, and authorized personnel in accordance with applicable Department of Defense (DoD), Air Force, EMS, and V2X operational requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) emergency medical response, assessment, stabilization, treatment, and transport services for authorized personnel on Ascension Island.
  • Respond to emergency medical incidents throughout AAAF-controlled areas and facilities in accordance with established EMS response requirements and operational protocols.
  • Operate emergency medical vehicles, ambulances, and associated emergency response equipment safely and effectively.
  • Provide emergency trauma care, airway management, cardiac care, medication administration, and emergency stabilization within authorized scope of practice.
  • Support emergency medical response activities involving life, limb, or eyesight-saving interventions.
  • Coordinate patient transfer activities and support MEDEVAC operations as required.
  • Maintain readiness for after-hours emergency response requirements due to the remote nature of Ascension Island operations.
  • Support clinic operations, patient care activities, and emergency medical standby requirements as directed.
  • Document patient care activities, treatments, assessments, and operational reports in accordance with applicable EMS and medical documentation standards.
  • Maintain emergency medical equipment, medications, supplies, and operational readiness of response vehicles and equipment.
  • Participate in mass casualty response planning, emergency preparedness exercises, and contingency medical operations.
  • Coordinate with providers, nurses, laboratory personnel, firefighters, external agencies, and medical leadership during emergency operations.
  • Support operational medical readiness, patient safety, infection prevention, and quality assurance activities.
  • Maintain all required certifications, competencies, continuing education, and operational training requirements throughout employment.
  • Comply with AAAF Emergency Medical Services Protocols, AFI 44-119, AFI 44-102, DoDI 6055.06, and Air Force Fire & Emergency Services EMS Playbook requirements.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of an accredited Paramedic program

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience within the last three (3) years working as a Paramedic required.
  • Experience in emergency medical services, emergency response, trauma care, or critical care transport preferred.
  • Experience supporting remote, overseas, military, or austere operational environments preferred.
  • Prior experience supporting government healthcare contracts or operational medicine environments preferred.

Certifications and Licensure

  • Current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Paramedic certification required.
  • Current unrestricted state or national Paramedic certification/license required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred.
  • Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) certification preferred.
  • Must maintain all required continuing education, certifications, licenses, and credentialing requirements for the duration of employment.
  • If assigned to fire station operations, must meet firefighter certification requirements in accordance with DoDM 6055.06

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of emergency medical services, Advanced Life Support (ALS), trauma care, and emergency response procedures.
  • Familiarity with operational medicine, remote medical operations, and austere environment healthcare delivery.
  • Ability to rapidly assess, prioritize, stabilize, and treat critically ill or injured patients.
  • Ability to function effectively in high-stress emergency response situations.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to operate ambulances, emergency response equipment, and medical monitoring devices safely.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention, patient safety, and EMS documentation standards.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary emergency response and healthcare teams.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to work in clinical, field, operational, and emergency response environments.
  • Capability to function effectively within remote or austere island conditions.
  • Ability to respond to medical emergencies, disasters, and contingency operations at any time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and move patients, stretchers, and medical equipment during emergency operations.
  • Ability to work extended hours, rotating schedules, on-call requirements, and emergency response shifts as required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying environmental and weather conditions.

Additional Requirements

  • Must meet all medical, security, credentialing, and deployment requirements per contract and V2X policy.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain required access credentials and base access authorization.
  • Valid passport and ability to travel internationally as required.
  • Ability to comply with all Ascension Island operational, environmental, and safety requirements.
  • Must maintain professional conduct, emergency response readiness, and operational readiness standards required for overseas contingency operations.
