Job Summary and Qualifications

The Paramedic will collect and convey information to both their team members and the attending Physician regarding the health status of patients. The Hospital Paramedic will perform all duties identified in their job description and validated by competency assessment under the License of the Physician Medical Director. They will report to the Nursing Director of Emergency Services. They will serve as a member of the Healthcare team through active communication; documentation; feedback and assistance as needed or requested. They will collaborate with the RN involved in the care of the patient.  The Hospital Paramedic will provide for patient safety. Attend meetings and in-services as required by departmental policy. Contributes to the growth and development of self and department. Maintains an active involvement. Maintains good working relationship with patients, visitors, physicians, co-workers, and other hospital staff. Maintains competence with charting system.   

 The Paramedic may not, under any circumstances, perform the prohibited functions listed below

  • Advanced airway practices (such as endotracheal intubation, needle decompression, tracheostomy, cricothyrotomy, ventilator management, etc) 

  • Administration of IV Ketamine push 

  • Unsupervised cardioversion, defibrillation and/or external pacing 

  • Administration and management of IV titratable drips 

  • Discharge teaching 

  • ESI level assignment 


  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Assist the ED clinical team with providing top quality patient care as within their scope of practice in the hospital setting 

  • Participate in continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives 

  • Maintains competence in skills and documentation 

  • Utilize SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) for effective communication 

  • Support and represent the facility’s Mission, Vision, and Core Values while performing the role 

  • Attend meetings and in-services as required by departmental policy 


  • TECHNICAL FUNCTIONS 

  • 12 Lead EKG 

  • Input and output documentation 

  • Document in medical record 

  • EHR documentation of care  

  • Document in EMAR & BCMA 

  • Administer approved medications 

  • Stock 

  • Check equipment 

  • Participate in quality improvement projects 

  • Insert IVs/IOs per competency 

  • Obtain blood cultures per competency  

  • Discontinue IVs 

  • Obtain clean catch urine samples 

  • Clean stretchers and rooms 

  • Perform CPR assist with ACLS and PALS 

  • Transport patients 

  • Splint application  

  • Wound cleaning  

  • Apply traction  

  • Application of oxygen per order  

  • Accucheck 

  • Answer EMS radio and work with Charge Nurse or Flow Coordinator for placement of patient (not allowed to give or take orders over radio) 

  • Oral and endotracheal suctioning 

  • Suture set up and assistance  

  • Chest tube/pleur-e-vac set up  

  • Remove sutures and staples 

  • Administration of Fleet’s enema 

  • Central line tray set up  

  • Insert oral/nasal airways 

  • Lumbar puncture set up and assist  

  • Thoracentesis set up and assist 

  • Serve as role of ED tech in trauma activations 

  • Clean stretchers, closets, and cabinets as appropriate 

  • Additional tasks as otherwise specified by ED leadership 

  • Restraint application and removal 

 

What qualifications you will need:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Spt must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • PALS Pediatric Adv Life Supt must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • Paramedic
  • Associate Degree, or Vocational School Graduate
