Grade: Private/Paramedic

Schedule: 40 hours/week, Tuesday-Friday, 7:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Position Summary

The City of Auburn Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Third Rescue Paramedic. This role is designed to staff a third rescue unit during peak service demand hours, supplementing the department's existing 24/7 rescue coverage. The Third Rescue Paramedic will respond to medical emergencies, support fireground operations, and perform a variety of EMS and administrative duties in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to all emergency and non-emergency calls within scope of training.
  • Provide immediate medical attention, administer first aid/life support, and transport patients as needed.
  • Operate advanced medical equipment (EKGs, defibrillators, bag valve masks) and assess medical priorities.
  • Triage in multi-patient scenarios; coordinate with police, fire, mutual aid, and air medical transport.
  • Participate in public health activities and community education.
  • Assist with EMS Quality Improvement projects and instruct department EMS trainings.
  • Oversee EMS inventory and maintain apparatus readiness.
  • Perform hazardous tasks under emergency conditions.
  • Uphold chain of command and promote a productive, professional workplace.
  • Manage interpersonal dynamics, mediate conflicts, and maintain a positive, flexible attitude.
  • Maintain a State of Maine driver's license and a good driving record.
  • Report any violations of city policies, including safety, health, harassment, or misuse of property.
  • Participate in ongoing training, study, and drills.
  • Maintain station and grounds; participate in special projects and assignments.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of city streets and surrounding communities.
  • Perform mechanical work related to EMS apparatus and equipment

Qualifications

  • High school diploma.
  • Maine Licensed Paramedic.
  • Preferred: Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC) or equivalent, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or equivalent.
  • Good judgment under emergency conditions.
  • Effective teamwork and relationship-building with municipal, state, and federal authorities.
  • Proficiency with computer technology relevant to departmental needs

Schedule & Employment Terms

  • Regular hours: 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday.
  • 40-hour workweek (not the 24-on/72-off model).

Compensation & Benefits

  • Paid at the rank of Private at the Paramedic (EMS) license level, per CBA.
  • Rescue stipend: $3.50 per hour.
  • Lateral entry steps and tuition reimbursement available.
  • Annual uniform reimbursement: $485.
  • Holidays off (no additional compensation): New Year's Day, Washington's Birthday, Patriots' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day after, Christmas Day, Martin Luther King Day, and any one-time national holiday mandated by the president and observed by other city departments.
  • One personal day per contract year.
  • Vacation accrual rates based on years of service (see contract for details).
  • Sick leave accrual: 12.4 hours/month; partial cash-out available after 10 years of service.
  • Wellness days available through the City's Wellness Program.

Working Conditions

  • Physical activities: sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, lifting, climbing, squatting, grasping, repetitive hand/finger movement, keyboard use.
  • Emergency conditions: medical incidents, fire grounds, accidents, explosions, hazardous environments.
  • Exposure to adverse weather, aggressive patients, combustion products, toxic substances, and other hazards.
  • Work may be performed under stressful conditions, poor weather, and nighttime hours
