The duties include but are not limited to:

• Performs orientation and mobility evaluations that focus on long and short term needs of the student on new referrals and on three-year reevaluations. • Provides consultation and support services to parents, regular and special education teachers, other school personnel, and students sighted peers. • Instructs students with visual impairments in skills and knowledge that enable them to travel independently based on the IEP. • Teaches visually impaired students to travel with proficiency, safety, and confidence in familiar and unfamiliar environments. • Prepares and uses equipment and materials such as tactile maps, models, distance low vision devices, adaptive mobility devices, and long canes for the development of orientation and mobility skills. • Be knowledgeable of community-based resources available to visual impaired students. • Provides progress reports to parents. • Communicates with specialists in low vision, ophthalmologists, and optometrists concerning exams and attends exams when appropriate. • Provides information about the vision and orientation and mobility programs to the schools and community. • Maintains a reference library of current professional materials. • Acquires information about current research, development, and technology by attending conferences and workshops and by reading journals in the field of visual impairment. • Travels to the students assigned schools and/or home to provide direct and/or consultative special education services relative to the vision loss. • Other duties as assigned by the principal.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must have a Bachelors degree in visual impairment, special education, or a related field. Must have a Masters certification in orientation and mobility. Must have an AERAcademy certification. Must have experience with school-aged children and children with multiple impairments. Must have the ability to travel between sites.

Duty Days: 187 Salary Range: $31,275.00 - $[insert end of range]

Additional Job Information

Applicants selected for certified positions must have undergone an ABIFBI criminal history background check, fingerprinting administered through sites selected and approved by the MCPSS and State of Alabama Education Department, and been declared suitable and fit to teach under state law. Applicants selected must also pass a drug-screening test via forms provided by Human Resources during the selection process.
