Experience, Licenses and Certifications: A valid New Jersey driver's license is preferred but not required.
Operator I - Minimum seven (7) years’ experience in a wastewater treatment facility. A New Jersey Treatment Plant S2 license is required (or must be actively pursuing*). A New Jersey C2 collections system license is preferred. *Actively pursuing is defined as taking the associated State license exam at least two (2) times per year until the license is obtained.
Operator II - Minimum six (6) years’ experience in a wastewater treatment facility. A New Jersey Treatment Plant S1 license is required (or must be actively pursuing*). A New Jersey C1 collections system license is preferred. *Actively pursuing is defined as taking the associated State license exam at least two (2) times per year until the license is obtained.
Operator III - Minimum five (5) years’ experience in a wastewater treatment facility. A New Jersey Treatment Plant S1 license is required (or must be actively pursuing*). A New Jersey C1 collections system license is preferred. *Actively pursuing is defined as taking the associated State license exam at least two (2) times per year until the license is obtained.
Education: High school diploma or equivalency certificate required. Satisfactory completion of both the Basic and Advanced Wastewater Treatment course is required. Completion of the Advanced Wastewater Collections course is preferred.
Physical Demands: Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation to ensure the health and safety of oneself and others are maintained. Perform physical activities that require considerable use of the arms, legs and the whole body, such as sitting, standing, climbing (including ladders), working from elevated areas, lifting up to 50 lbs., balancing, walking, stooping, pushing, pulling, and handling heavy objects. Must qualify for and possess the ability to perform entry into confined spaces while wearing proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as, but not limited to, canister and dust masks, as well as SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus).
Working Conditions: Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and may be required to work indoors and outdoors depending upon the nature of the position.
Requirements: Must have knowledge of the principles and methods used in the treatment and disposal of wastewater and biosolids, as well as understand and comprehend the laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the treatment and disposal of wastewater and biosolids. Must be knowledgeable of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions involved in the conveyance of wastewater. Mechanical and/or problem-solving aptitude, computer literacy, and the ability to learn and retain technical information are required. Must be able to read, write, communicate and understand English sufficiently to perform the functions of the position and execute verbal and written directions. This position may work on a rotating shift basis.
The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (P.V.S.C.), a publicly-owned wastewater treatment facility located in Newark, New Jersey, is currently accepting applications for experienced Operators. Created in 1902, PVSC is the 5th largest facility of its kind in the United States, directly serving approximately 1.4 million residents in 48 municipalities located in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union Counties. The 140-acre plant is designed to treat an average of 330 million gallons per day (“mgd”) of wastewater with an annual average flow of approximately 241 mgd.
