This position will be filled at either the Operations Support Specialist 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division is responsible for providing engineering support to aid in safe operation and modification of Laboratory's Nuclear Facilities. The successful candidate will be a member of the Project Controls Group supporting the modification team and will report to the Project Controls Team Leader. Modification provides collaborative, innovative designs to solve problems or improve safety and non-safety systems at LANL's primary plutonium facility to maintain the LANL mission. The Operations Support Specialist will be responsible for ensuring the robustness of the Configuration Management program by implementing key performance indicators for the design processes at TA-55, analyzing the effectiveness, completeness, and identifying additional corrective actions required for continuous improvement of the PFE design process. The Operations Support Specialist will also be responsible for reviewing engineering design packages, change paperwork and standalone documents for completeness and compliance with our policies and procedures. You will be expected to use personal leadership skills and effective communication to support daily operations specific functions to PFE Division, modification engineering sub-area, and throughout PFE Division as needed.

Provides direct support of operations in programs, facilities, or organizations that have an operational or process-based deliverable. Ensures that the process is followed through to completion with efficiency, accuracy, and with high quality, while understanding and maintaining priorities. Follows established procedures, maintains documentation such as record-keeping, budget and cost-tracking, inventory-tracking; develops documentation when necessary. Communicates and coordinates with team-members, supervisors, and other involved organizations to ensure that the deliverable will be efficiently met, obstacles are anticipated, and priorities are clearly understood. Assists with the development of detailed plans to manage processes, scope, quality, efficiency, risk to deliverables, communications, and professional responsibility. Performs various administrative tasks such as procurments, travel administration, resource scheduling, as well as office and personnel support. Assists with and coordinates the review and revision of procedures, scope, and process development and improvement pertaining to organizational or facility operations.

Operations Support Specialist 2 ($72,800 - $115,400)
  • Provides issues management support for a diverse range of complex issues where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors, including the compilation, review, and assessment of data and the development of management assessments and/or recommendations.
  • Assists in developing corrective actions that accurately address apparent and root cause analysis, data analysis, project management, safety and coordination of presentations and briefings and conducting critiques.
  • Contributes to the organization's goals and objectives. Resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways.
  • Provides customer service to internal customers and external customers.
  • Networks with senior internal and external personnel in own area of expertise. Requires limited responsibility for making routine contacts on general matters outside of the immediate organization.
  • Works under limited direction; receives general instructions on new assignments. Work is evaluated upon completion to ensure objectives have been met.
Operations Support Specialist 3 ($87,800 - $143,000)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level:
  • Provides guidance in interpreting Laboratory policies impacting organizational to ensure compliance.
  • Responsible for researching new strategies to ensure completeness of our delivered engineering documentation with minimal oversight.
  • Analyzes data output for trends and/or any deviations for ongoing assessment and ensures accuracy of metrics.
  • Provides expert level input and guidance in the development of operational and administrative policies procedures, and reports.
  • Oversees the implementation of documentation systems and ensures compliance with all applicable document control and records management activities and security/compliance implications.

Additional Job Requirements for Operations Support Specialist 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Advanced experience with various softwares such as Adobe, Microsoft Word/Excel, Outlook, PPT, Teams, etc.
  • Must possess strong personal leadership and teamwork skills.
  • Experience making independent decisions within areas of responsibility.
  • Must be able to operate independently and must exercise individual initiative to demonstrate successful completion of assigned tasks.
  • Attention to detail with high level accuracy when reviewing technical and general engineering documents.
  • Ability/flexibility to adapt to changing priorities/multiple tasks to meet customer deadlines.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Associate's Degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and 4 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

  • Active Q Clearance.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: Work is fully on site and will include C shift support (Friday - Monday: Day Shift). On call support will also be required. #ShiftWork

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2: Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
