Overview: Operations Supervisor

To supervise the assigned shift in the unloading, storage and load out of metal alloys and other bulk commodities in a safe and efficient manner. Supervise the union-represented employees, create and manage the work schedule on a daily basis, assist in supervising the maintenance, observe and train the employees per the KM SQE (safety-quality-environment) program.

 MANAGE AS A BUSINESS LEADER

 1. Secure and Grow Base Business (Increase service offering to current client base)

 2. Identify growth opportunities; execute 1 expansion project per terminal.

 3. Manage P&Ls to preserve operating margins and achieve EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest Taxes Depreciation Amortization) Targets

 4. Understand profitability of each customer and commodity

 5. Participate in developing the facility forecast to achieve 95% accuracy (final week to actual).

 6. Develop competition and market understanding and develop business strategy to exploit both

 7. Develop and properly manage KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) and MOEs (Measurements of Effectiveness)

 8. Participate in developing the 72 hour planning cycle (review last 24, confirm current 24, forecast next 48)

 ACT AS A RISK MANAGER

 1. Identify abnormal safety, environmental and operational issues and mitigate associate risks and mitigate associated risk.

 2. Understand facility operational and mechanical limitations and prevent service failures

 3. Understand EHS compliance requirements and prevent regulatory exceedance

 ENGAGE AS AN EMPLOYEE MOTIVATOR

 1. Coach, teach and mentor direct reports to achieve established goals

 2. Develop a collaborative work environment which includes employees at all levels

 3. Effectively communicate and enforce standards across the workforce

 4. Effectively recognize employees for exceeding the standard

 5. Identify and address employee issues at the terminal level

 6. Identify and develop a plan to change or remove non-performers

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Supervises shift operations, maintenance, technical and administrative activities in a manner consistent with safe company operations.

• Supervises the development of terminal personnel including safety, environmental awareness, employee conduct and operational cross-training.

• Assures the utilization of specific controls, procedures and safety criteria for each of the terminal functions.

• Assess and recommend new procedures to reduce costs and improve productivity.

• Understand the operations and has the ability to supervise union employees effectively, safely, and professionally.

• Requires availability to support Terminal Management and assist in managing multiple shifts, including the cement facility that may operate 24 hours 7 days a week during barge-rail-truck operations.

• Requires the ability to supervise and support numerous operations simultaneously including the Process operations - o rebar and other steel unloading and loading, loading and unloading of multiple grain products o salt loading and unloading, loading Frac sand rail cars o other bulk commodities o cement unloading by rail and barge 

• Support new business as it arrives.

• Work hours supporting the movement of seasonable commodities which may include weekends and holidays.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school or equivalent related work experience.

PREFERRED EDUCATION:

 

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or operations management.

 EXPERIENCE:

• 3 to 5 years of progressively more responsible industry-related experience within production operations.

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience relative to bulk operations including experience with rail loading and unloading, truck loading and unloading, and barge loading and unloading.

• Demonstrated knowledge of electrical control systems, PLC systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechanical issues related to the bulk transfer industry.

• Basic understanding of bulk transfer equipment such as grain legs, conveyors, mobile equipment such as cranes, forklifts and medium wheel loaders, and understanding the cement unloading equipment.

• Experience planning work crews including changing priorities in order to support customer needs.

• Prior supervisory experience of a union-represented employee workforce.

• Demonstrated ability to influence others to adhere to Company policies and procedures.

• Experience communicating in-person to staff and supporting team members

• Conducting safety meetings in compliance with company policy in a professional manner.

• Experience with incident investigation, reporting safety near misses , security and environmental incidents.

 CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

• A satisfactory driving record as determined by Kinder Morgan Inc. and a current, valid State driver's license are required.

• Strong supervision and planning skills in a union environment and with demonstrated ability and practical judgment to handle diverse and/or complex operations problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Must be able to wear the standard 5 Points of PPE; examples, but not limited to: (Hard Hat, Safety glasses-Goggles, KM uniform, Gloves, Rain Gear, Steel Toe Boots, personal fall protection, hearing protection, and personal floatation device.)

• Employee must be physically capable of completing and satisfying all training requirements as stipulated by local, state or Federal agencies and/or Company policy.

• Physical activities include, but are not limited to: talking, hearing, standing, sitting, walking, climbing ladders and platforms, bending, kneeling, crouching, stooping, crawling, lifting, pulling, pushing, hand gripping, writing and typing.

• Ability to climb ladders and work at heights in excess of 100' feet off the ground.

• Ability to navigate platforms and uneven surfaces on a frequent basis.

• Ability to perform work over waterways, such as barges.
