This is a full time, salaried, overtime-exempt Lighting Supervisor. UtahPresents at Kingsbury Hall is seeking a skilled theatrical lighting technician and leader who is enthusiastic about settling into a home venue and continuing to hone their skills as a stage electrician, programmer, and designer. Exceptional candidates will have prior experience with touring production, either as a local or touring technician. They will also demonstrate above-average client service, team management skills, and artistic vision. Importantly, we are seeking an individual with a passion for cultivating a culture of respect, curiosity, artistic expression, and growth.

Kingsbury Hall is a 1992-seat historic proscenium theatre in the heart of University of Utah in Salt Lake City that hosts a wide spectrum of events and performances. Operating year-round, we support around 20 performances on the UtahPresents season, as well as numerous rental events for community groups, national and international promoters, and campus groups. Genres include music, theater, dance, opera, comedy, film screenings, lectures, conferences, graduations, and more. Support may extend to UtahPresents presentations in other venues a few times a year.

The Lighting Supervisor is a hands-on role overseeing all stage lighting needs including light plot drafting and execution, console programming, and distribution tie-in. The Lighting Supervisor will also assist in the advancing process to communicate venue specifics to touring and community productions and assist designers with troubleshooting and adapting their plot to Kingsbury Hall. During productions, the Lighting Supervisor will (independently or with a team of over-hire technicians) lead the hang, focus, strike, programming, and board operation processes. For certain performances within UtahPresents series such as world music and jazz, the Lighting Supervisor has the opportunity to design and busk, making this position key in defining the UtahPresents artistic style.

The Lighting Supervisor reports to the Production Manager and works alongside the full-time Technical Director. In addition to event support, the Lighting Supervisor is responsible for all daily operation and system maintenance, including system design and improvement. As part of a small team of full-time employees, the Lighting Supervisor will, alongside the Production Manager and Technical Director, assist in all manner of stage operations and maintenance including but not limited to fly-rail operation, weight-loading, rolling dance floor, setting stage layouts, and running shows as a stagehand.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Serve as head venue electrician for all events from advance coordination and pre-hangs, through load-in, show operation, and load-out.
  • Coordinate with touring productions and community users to support smooth event transitions and execution.
  • Program and operate lighting consoles for rehearsals and performances.
  • Design lighting and provide live busking for select events.
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and inventory venue lighting and stage equipment.
  • Maintain current lighting plots, equipment records, and related documentation.
  • Supervise and mentor early-career part-time technicians.
  • Recommend equipment purchases and improvements to workflows and production procedures.
  • Support efficient production operations and changeovers.
  • Maintain a positive team-based approach to problem solving; navigate challenges with patience and respect.
  • Work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Assist with general stagehand and production support tasks as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.

Preferences

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Two or more years of prior experience as a manager or leader in lighting or stage electrician positions. Please note any professional touring production experience, either as venue staff or a touring technician in your application materials.

  • Professional experience as a leading electrician in theatrical and stage applications.
  • Proficiency with Vectorworks and Lightwright. Ability to read and create technical drawings, lighting plots, technical riders, and production documentation.
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical loads, dimming systems, and basic electrical theory for safe operation of production systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of counterweight and chain motor rigging practices.
  • Proficiency with ETC EOS lighting consoles.
  • Advanced knowledge of conventional and intelligent lighting fixtures, cabling, and related systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with entertainment networking protocols, including ETCNet, sACN, Art-Net, and OSC.
  • Experience with projection mapping systems and software.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a team of individuals with respect and care.
  • Familiarity with OSHA and ANSI standards, fire codes, and basic workplace safety practices. Course completions and certifications are a plus.
  • Proficiency with Mac OS, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, Slack, and cloud-based storage systems.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to remain calm, adaptable, kind, and solutions-oriented in fast-paced environments.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Able to withstand long hours of concentrated physical activity, including reaching overhead and lifting 75+ pounds.
  • Able to climb ladders and work at heights over 20 feet.
  • Able to move heavy equipment and work with a variety of power tools and electronic systems.
