Operations Director -

Latin America & Caribbean

Mission

As a part of the overall LAC team, called and leaning into mission together, provide Christ-centered, mission effective, forward-looking operational leadership for YL LAC division - helping to raise up, support, and empower teams that are owning and leading the "full operational scope" at every ministry level.

Divisional Posture

As a division, LAC places a high value on subsidiarity. This core posture leads us to support and integrate via teams that are creating teams down to the area level. The Divisional Ops role seeks to lean into this posture, taking into account that the person serving in the role would be able to fully lead each area of responsibility while cultivating a consistent functional approach to empower, raise up and support each level of leadership to fully own and lead the responsibility in their context and leadership space.

Objectives

It is expected that success will be evident in the following outcomes:

  • Operations, Functional leads, and Field staff work in harmony to achieve Young Life mission objectives.
  • Divisional Operations is joyfully connecting and integrating with Young Life's International and LAC operational teams.
  • Operations Coordinators are equipped to carry out their support of the VP, the Regions, and Countries they serve.
  • VPs are equipped to manage operational matters and make informed decisions alongside their ops teams.
  • Operational Infrastructure and systems are supported, maintained and evolved to allow for the mission to continue to scale and mature.
  • Controls are adequately designed, implemented, and reviewed to reasonably ensure compliance and mitigate risk across ministry levels.
  • Operational processes are effectively designed, implemented and integrated to scale across ministry levels.

Core Operational Functions

Operational Intelligence and Vision

  • Partner with Field VP's to build a common vision for operational oversight and excellence.
  • Observe trends and weaknesses in operating structure and help lead corrective action.
  • Help identify and develop training and experience necessary to ensure field leadership has requisite operational vision to fully own the work in their leadership space/geography alongside a maturing operational support team.
  • Support and empower the maturing operational support team at the VP/GEO level as they support teams below them
  • Cultivate methods and processes for effective operational analysis, growth and support

Systems and Infrastructure

  • Support development, maintenance, and integration of core operating systems and infrastructure
  • Help ensure core operating systems are evolving and maturing in scalable ways for mission growth down to the local area/club level
  • Assist working across teams to help design and enhance dashboards and other processes used for effective analysis

HR

  • Maintain a high value of the "volunteer spirit" and our "shared call" into the mission
  • Orient HR around the core purpose of how it helps us reach "every kid, everywhere" and see leaders flourish
  • Help establish, enhance and integrate clear HR protocols, systems and infrastructure across the division
  • Work with VPs to ensure each geography has clarity around their organizational structure and job roles/objectives
  • Help develop and support hiring and onboarding processes for new staff around the division
  • Cultivate processes to establish a culture of healthy and effective evaluation around the division
  • Continue developing healthy policy and procedure practices and other documentation to help ensure compliance and consistency
  • Coordinate and liaison with YL International HR team - helping to understand and integrate international initiatives and projects

Liaison Operational Functions

Legal Liaison

  • Cultivate a posture and processes for excellence and healthy compliance across the division
  • Help build scalable legal frameworks for each country that will open pathways for missional growth
  • Understand and help secure appropriate legal liability/coverage needed to help support country ministries
  • Help manage internal and external auditing processes
  • Coordinate and liaison with YL International and LAC Legal Counsel ensuring effective rhythms for VP/GEO projects

Properties Liaison

  • Partner with GEO Camp Coords and SALT alongside property construction projects (ie: Camp and/or Training Center Properties)
  • Serve as the divisional liaison with the YL International Camping Department and GEO Camping Coords

Points of Coordination

  • Coordinate closely with SALT lead teams
  • Facilitate regular communication with GEO Ops Team Leads
  • Maintain and coordinate working relationships and communication with IOLT, IFLT and ILT as directed
  • As needed, make on-site visits to help understand issues and find solutions.
  • Participate in International Leadership meetings and conferences as needed

Skills and Experience Required

Missional Call and Spiritual Leadership

  • Deep desire to serve in a Christ-centered, Kingdom minded mission.

  • Desire engage in a team-based culture encouraging spiritual growth alongside professional development.

Strategic and Multi-Cultural Matrix Leadership Capacity

  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills across multi-experienced, matrixed, and multi-national teams - ability to work well with others within and across the mission, interfacing and winning respect with a variety of cultures
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence rather than direct command.
  • Proven success in supervising or mentoring staff who have dual reporting lines (matrix leadership).
  • Demonstrated ability to train and empower others.
  • Strong cross cultural communication capability both written and oral - fluency in English and Spanish
  • Strong ability to understand cultural nuances

Analytical Capacity

  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Able to interpret and synthesize operational information to aid in critical decision making.
  • Creative and proactive thinker.

Administrative and Systems Proficiency

  • Excellent communication abilities, both written and oral; language skills necessary to properly communicate with country and division personnel.
  • Very strong administrative skills with ability to get things done.
  • Proven ability to learn, design, master, and teach effective system infrastructures across multiple leadership levels.
  • Works well remotely finding ways to keep connected with a disbursed team across the division.
  • Mastery of Google Suite and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and a proven ability to learn and teach Young Life's specific enterprise software (e.g., Salesforce, WorkDay, or local equivalents).

Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Skills

  • Highly relational.
  • Strong team cooperation and integration skills - a team player
  • Proven ability to manage frustration and crisis with professionalism, tact, and consistency as a follower of Jesus.
  • Capable of handling sensitive conversations, and legal or personnel issues with strict confidentiality.
  • Display a high understanding of one's self and contexts.

Young Life Context

  • Strong Knowledge (may be developed over time) in Young Life policies, procedures and culture.
  • Working knowledge of YL internal and external operational and financial controls and models.

Working Conditions and Ongoing Responsibilities

Location: This is a remote position, either stationed in an LAC country or willing to consider a geographical move to LAC.

Environment: Must be willing to work in a variety of environments, ranging from corporate offices to camp properties and field ministry settings.

Travel: Travel within the LAC Division and occasional travel to the US or other international locations for training and conferences.

Communication Cadence: This position requires consistent, proactive communication with the Senior Vice President, Divisional Finance Director and Strategic Initiatives Director, Field Vice Presidents, and GEO Operations Coordinators and other Divisional/GEO roles across multiple time zones.

Funding: Candidate is fully responsible for funding the office/role. Divisional support will be considered as needed.

Volunteer: Candidate is expected to volunteer as a leader with Young Life in their local area.
