Position Summary

The Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN) provides and coordinates safe, individualized perioperative nursing care to surgical patients before, during, and after operative procedures. Functioning in the circulating and/or scrub role under the policies of Antelope Valley Medical Center (AVMC), the OR RN assesses patient needs, develops and implements the plan of care, directs and supervises ancillary surgical staff, and serves as the patient advocate to ensure safety and quality outcomes throughout the perioperative experience.

This is a 13-week, at-will, travel registered nurse assignment supporting trauma, orthopedic, and robotic-assisted surgical caseloads.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The following duties are representative and not exhaustive. Additional duties may be assigned by AVMC as necessary to meet operational and patient-care needs:

  • Perform a comprehensive perioperative nursing assessment and develop, implement, and evaluate an individualized plan of care for each surgical patient.
  • Function in the circulating and/or scrub RN role during trauma, orthopedic, robotic-assisted, and general surgical procedures.
  • Verify informed consent, surgical site marking, and patient identification; lead and participate in the surgical Time-Out and Universal Protocol.
  • Prepare the operating room, ensuring required instruments, supplies, implants, medications, and equipment are available per surgeon preference cards.
  • Maintain a sterile field and enforce strict aseptic technique; monitor and correct breaks in sterility throughout the procedure.
  • Perform and document accurate surgical counts (instruments, sponges, sharps) with the surgical technologist before, during, and after each case.
  • Administer and document medications and solutions on and off the sterile field in accordance with the California Nursing Practice Act and facility policy.
  • Position, prep, and drape patients safely; monitor patient status and communicate changes to the surgical and anesthesia team.
  • Direct and supervise surgical technologists and ancillary staff, delegating tasks consistent with scope of practice.
  • Manage specimens, surgical implants, and equipment, including robotic systems, per manufacturer and facility guidelines.
  • Document perioperative care accurately and completely in the electronic health record.
  • Respond to surgical and patient emergencies, including during weekday, weekend, holiday, and on-call hours.
  • Comply with all AVMC policies, the California Nursing Practice Act, The Joint Commission standards, AORN recommended practices, OSHA, and HIPAA requirements.
Requirements & Experience
  • Current, active California Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
  • Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification.
  • NIHSS (NIH Stroke Scale) certification - annual renewal required by AVMC.
  • Minimum two (2) years of Operating Room (OR) experience.
  • Minimum one (1) year of travel RN experience.
  • Trauma, Orthopedics, and Robotics experience required.
  • Completed skills checklist required at the time of submission.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, with or without reasonable accommodation.   • Frequent standing and walking for extended periods (often the length of a surgical case, which may exceed several hours).
  • Frequent bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, kneeling, and repetitive hand and wrist motions.
  • Frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling; ability to lift and carry instrument trays and assist with patient positioning (lifting up to approximately 25 50 lbs, consistent with AORN safe-handling guidance).
  • Fine manual dexterity, tactile sensitivity, and the ability to handle small instruments with precision.
  • Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and hearing adequate to monitor the surgical field and respond to verbal direction.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, sharps, surgical smoke, anesthetic gases, radiation (lead apron use during fluoroscopy/robotics), latex, chemicals, and temperature variation within the OR environment.
  • Use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) throughout the shift.
Compensation & Benefits

Total Pay Package: This travel assignment is compensated through a blended weekly pay package consisting of a taxable hourly wage plus a non-taxable travel stipend (lodging and meals & incidental expenses).

  • Taxable hourly wage: $53.93 per hour. In compliance with California Labor Code 432.3 (SB 1162 / SB 642), this represents a good-faith estimate of the taxable hourly wage the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position upon hire.
  • Non-taxable travel stipend: paid weekly for qualifying travelers who maintain a tax home, based on U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) FY2026 per diem rates for the work location (Lancaster, Los Angeles County: $191/day lodging and $86/day meals & incidental expenses). Stipend eligibility is subject to IRS rules and verification of a permanent tax home; travelers who do not qualify may receive the equivalent amount as taxable wages.
  • Estimated total weekly value (taxable wage plus stipend) is approximately $3,265 for a standard 40-hour week, equivalent to a blended rate of about $81.63 per hour. Final compensation is determined by experience, certifications, stipend eligibility, and assignment-specific factors.
  • Overtime is paid in accordance with California law (time-and-one-half after 8 hours in a workday and after 40 hours in a workweek; double-time after 12 hours in a workday).
  • Meal and rest periods provided in accordance with California law (a 30-minute meal period and paid 10-minute rest breaks per applicable schedule).
  • Paid sick leave provided in accordance with the California Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act (minimum 40 hours / 5 days per year for eligible employees).
  • All hours are subject to applicable California minimum-wage, overtime, meal/rest, and paid-sick-leave protections.
