Position Summary

Responsible for leading, planning, coordinating, and managing all operations and staff within Surgical Services, including the Operating Room, Outpatient Surgery, Anesthesia, and PACU. Ensures safe, high-quality, and efficient patient care across all perioperative areas.

Oversees scheduling (including visiting specialists), staffing, budgets, materials, and overall departmental resources. Develops and implements policies, workflows, and quality improvement initiatives aligned with hospital standards and regulatory requirements.

Ensures compliance with AORN guidelines, The Joint Commission (TJC), and state/federal regulations. Promotes a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement while driving patient-centered and evidence-based care outcomes.

Position Qualification

Education

  • BSN required (NLN-accredited nursing program)
  • MSN or Master's in Healthcare or Business Administration preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years OR clinical experience
  • Minimum 2 years surgical services management experience (OR/surgery center or equivalent)

Licensure & Certifications

  • Active RN license in good standing (State of Alaska)
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS required
  • CNOR preferred (must obtain within 6 months)
  • CSSM preferred

Technical Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of AORN Guidelines and perioperative standards
  • Understanding of healthcare regulations (TJC, state, federal compliance)
  • Knowledge of budgeting, reimbursement, coding, and billing processes
  • Familiarity with electronic health records (Cerner preferred)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and office systems

Core Skills & Abilities

  • Strong leadership and team management in clinical environments
  • Ability to manage operations across multiple perioperative units
  • Effective communication and report writing skills
  • Ability to analyze data, interpret regulations, and apply policies
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities in complex situations
  • Ability to work with diverse patient populations, including psychiatric patients (Title 47)
  • Knowledge of non-violent crisis intervention techniques
