Job Description :

Role: One-to-One Exceptional Children Services School Nurse

Reports to: Principal and Director of ECS

FLSA Status: Exempt

Contract Days: 176 days

Retirement: TRS

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides direct one-to-one nursing care and continuous health monitoring for an assigned student throughout the school day and during school-related activities as assigned.
  • Administers all medications and treatments as prescribed and authorized by physician orders and district procedures.
  • Administers first aid as needed and oversees the assigned student's general health needs.
  • Prepares and implements emergency care plans specific to the assigned student's medical condition.
  • Administers or assists with treatments needed by the assigned student including, but not limited to, suctioning (including tracheostomy care), tube feedings, nebulizer treatments, diabetic care, seizure monitoring, tracheostomy management, and other specialized procedures.
  • Checks and monitors vital signs and medical status as required by the student's healthcare plan.
  • Maintains infection control procedures and ensures adherence to safety protocols.
  • Maintains health records, medication logs, treatment records, and physician orders for the assigned student.
  • Maintains secure storage of all medications and medical supplies assigned to the student.
  • Maintains accurate daily logs of medications, treatments, and nursing services provided.
  • Obtains and maintains records of parental consent to administer medication and provide treatment.
  • Communicates regularly with parents, school personnel, and medical providers regarding the student's health needs and status.
  • Maintains adequate medical supplies and equipment needed to support the assigned student.
  • Completes accident or incident reports as necessary.
  • Maintains a clean and organized environment for medical care and treatment.
  • Reports to the principal and appropriate personnel any medical situations or safety concerns affecting the assigned student or school environment.
  • Maintains emergency contact information and medical documentation for the assigned student.
  • Provides in-services and health-related training to staff regarding the assigned student's medical condition and emergency procedures as requested.
  • Keeps teachers and relevant staff informed regarding medical concerns and accommodations impacting the assigned student in the educational setting.
  • Maintains current CPR and First Aid certification and any other required nursing credentials.
  • Reads current nursing and medical journals and reviews current guidelines related to school nursing and student health services.
  • Attends required nursing meetings and professional learning opportunities.
  • Maintains a cooperative working relationship with appropriate governmental agencies, healthcare providers, and community organizations.
  • Communicates effectively with the public, staff members, students, parents, administrators and other contact persons using tact and good judgment.
  • Create and maintain records, files, reports, or schedules as may be required by area of assignment.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality with any sensitive material or information.
  • Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance and the ability to adapt to an extended/flexible work schedule.
  • Participate in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to the assignment.
  • Review current development, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibility.
  • Ensure adherence to good safety procedures.
  • Follow federal and state laws, as well as School Board policies and administrative directives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Hold or be eligible for required certification. Must hold RN Certification.
  • Ability to work well with students, parents, staff, medical providers, and the community.
  • Knowledge and ability to provide individualized medical care and emergency interventions for medically fragile students.
  • High integrity, excellent character, and good professional reputation.
  • Abide by the Georgia Professional Standards Code of Ethics for Educators.
  • Ability to be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.
  • Ability to perform routine physical activities such as bending and lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.
  • Must be able to properly and consistently supervise and ensure the safety of the assigned student, particularly during emergency situations.
