Overview:

The Oncology Registered Nurse is responsible for assessing the needs of each patient and planning the nursing care needed to meet those needs, including the spiritual, emotional, psychosocial, and physiological needs. The RN is then responsible for meeting those needs herself or for referring to other areas as deemed necessary. The RN will float duties for both oncology treatment sites and ambulatory infusion sites. The staff nurse is supervised by the manager of the Cancer Center.

Essential Duties

  • Administers chemotherapy, medication and blood products in a safe manner and appropriate manner in accordance with current policies.
  • Assists physicians with examinations and procedures as necessary.
  • Calls in new and renewal prescriptions with physician approval.
  • Capable of phone triage
  • Demonstrates capabilities to perform accurate patient assessments.
  • Demonstrates capability to educate patients.
  • Ensures accurate and current documentation on all patients.
  • Maintains chemo precautions within the clinic and periodically reviews these precautions with other staff members.
  • Maintains well stocked and clean work space.
  • Performs blood draws peripherally or per a venous access device.
  • Performs clerical work as necessary, uses the computer system as appropriate and monitors all inputs for billing purposes.
  • Performs dressing changes as needed.
Responsibilities:

Required Licensure/Education

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of Illinois. 
  • Certified as an Oncology Nurse by the Oncology Nurse Certification Board
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • *New Graduate RNs starting on or after 1/1/25 must earn Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) within 3 years of start date. 

Preferred Education

  • BSN preferred*

Exposure to:

  • Chemicals: Refer to MSDS sheets
  • Video Display Terminals: Average
  • Blood and Body Fluids: Very High-giving blood products, administering medications both IV and IM, open wounds and drains, urine or feces due to incontinent patients.
  • TB or Airborne Pathogens: Possible exposure to undiagnosed or untreated TB patients, from general contact. Patients coughing or patients with tracheotomies.

Sensory requirements (speech, vision, smell, hearing, touch):

  • Speech: Required to communicate with patient/families/staff/MD's. Needed for presentations/training, telephone communication.
  • Vision: Needed to read memos and literature, patient reports and charts.
  • Smell: Helpful to note presence of incontinence, vomitus, blood; electrical/fire safety.
  • Hearing: Necessary to hear alarms, hear patient verbalizations, meetings, telephone communications.
  • Touch: Necessary for writing, computer entry, filing.
