About the Role:
Are you looking to make a meaningful impact in your community? The City of Monte Vista is seeking a dedicated and motivated Utilities Maintenance Worker I to join our Public Works Department. The Utilities Maintenance I, is a full-time, entry-level position within the Water and Sewer Department. Under the general direction of the Utility Field Supervisor, this role performs semi-skilled labor focused on the operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of the City's water and sewer systems. Duties include reading and installing water meters, repairing lines, conducting routine water and sewer sampling, and operating heavy equipment and tools used in utility maintenance. This position requires physical labor in outdoor environments, including adverse weather and hazardous situations. The position is part of an on-call rotation, requiring a response time within 30-minutes. This position is eligible for full time medical benefits including sick and vacation accruals.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Installing and maintaining water meters, sewer lines, and curb stops
- Reading meters and reporting issues
- Performing water and sewer sampling
- Operating equipment such as backhoes, sewer flushers, and loaders
- Participating in on-call rotations and emergency response efforts
- Performing preventative and routine maintenance
What You Bring to the Table:
- High school diploma or GED
- Experience in water/sewer line installation or plumbing preferred
- Ability to lift up to 100 pounds regularly and work in all weather conditions
- Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Valid Colorado Driver's License (or ability to obtain)
- Willingness to obtain Class I Water and Sewer Distribution Certification within 18 months
- First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain
- Ability to respond within 30 minutes when on-call
Work Environment:
This is a physically active role performed mostly outdoors, often in challenging weather and environmental conditions. You'll be around machinery, chemicals, and noise. Safety and awareness are critical to success in this position.
