The Customer Service Unit serves as one of the primary communication links between members of the public and the Maine Department of Labor. Staff are responsible for answering phones and directing callers to the appropriate resource during the business hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Staff in this Unit provide information to people who call the Department or visit the administrative office. Other administrative duties support the Office of the Commissioner and other bureaus within the Department.

If so, then the Maine Department of Labor's dynamic Customer Service Unit needs you. We are seeking a talented individual to join our team and serve as one of the primary communication links between members of the public and the Maine Department of Labor, as well as handle administrative duties and assist various bureaus within the department.

Primary responsibilities include:
  • The primary responsibilities are to answer the main line for the Maine Department of Labor and refer constituents to the appropriate Bureaus, or resources, for resolution to their inquiries.
  • Greet walk-in visitors and constituents, identify their issues, answer their questions and/or refer them to the appropriate resources in state government.
  • Manages, maintains, and Enters data information into various tracking spreadsheets.
  • Performs special projects as they are assigned.
  • Provides other administrative duties such as photocopying, preparing mail, receiving mail, and maintaining the Bureau of Labor Standards' Labor Law poster and Video Libraries.

  • Knowledge of advanced computer applications, particularly Excel
Minimum qualifications:

Training, education, or experience in office and administrative support work that demonstrates 1) competency in applying a solid knowledge of modern office practices to perform complex, varied office support tasks, and 2) the ability to use independent decision-making on the appropriate processes to follow, information to process, and actions to take in accordance with standard procedures. All positions in this classification assume the qualifications of: Office Assistant I, Office Assistant II, and Office Associate I.

Preference will be given to those applicants:
  • A strong knowledge of advanced computer applications, particularly Excel.
  • Experience providing information and guidance.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Familiarity with workforce development resources.
  • Lived experience as or serving individuals underrepresented in the workforce.
