Position Summary:
The Occupational Therapist provides evaluations and therapeutic services to students as a related service within the educational setting. This role supports students' participation, independence, and success in their educational programs by addressing functional skills that impact learning. The Occupational Therapist collaborates with educators, families, and multidisciplinary teams to help students achieve their individualized educational goals.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- To provide classroom interventions which encourage functional independence in conjunction with each child's individual potential.
- To assist teachers and parents in determining which children have a need for Occupational Therapy.
- To complete a thorough and timely Occupational Therapy Assessment in the areas of motor performance, daily living skills, sensory integration and perception, neuromuscular development and prevocational skills.
- To develop individualized intervention plans for students which are transdisciplinary and which will assist the child's educational program.
- Develop and demonstrate suitable home treatment programs and help parents understand the student's disability.
- Monitor student progress and write bi-annual progress reports and/or any related report as necessary.
- Consult with educational staff (physical Therapist, speech therapist, APE teacher) regarding therapeutic interventions classroom modifications, and parts of the treatment plan which should be a part of the student's school day.
- Coordinate with other health and school personnel in the development of a comprehensive program for students.
- Contribute to the solution of problems/barriers relating to architecture.
- Provide in-service training and consultation to parents, teachers, and other school personnel regarding occupational therapy strategies, interventions, and accommodations that support student participation and success in the educational environment.
- Serve as a consultant to Adapted Physical Education Teachers.
- Conduct periodic meetings with parents to foster a better understanding of Occupational Therapy.
- Help design and adapt equipment useful to the particular needs of the students such as support rails in bathrooms and classroom furniture adjustment.
- Collect and maintain as part of the Special Education central file all medical records concerning each child.
- Work together with school personnel towards solutions of educational problems related to motor disability.
- Promote the use and acceptance of the educational consultation model for service delivery.
- Help parents and other family members to understand the student's disability and to encourage and demonstrate a suitable daily home treatment program.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Special Education.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of occupational therapy principles, practices, and evidence-based interventions for students with disabilities in educational settings.
- Knowledge of child development, motor performance, sensory integration, perception, neuromuscular development, activities of daily living, and pre-vocational skills.
- Ability to conduct comprehensive evaluations, interpret assessment results, and identify student needs related to educational performance.
- Skill in developing, implementing, and monitoring individualized intervention plans that support student participation and functional independence.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with parents, teachers, therapists, and other professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Skill in providing consultation, training, and guidance to school personnel and families regarding occupational therapy strategies, accommodations, and home programs.
- Ability to adapt environments, equipment, and materials to meet the unique needs of students and improve access to educational activities.
- Skill in maintaining accurate records, preparing reports, documenting student progress, and managing confidential information in accordance with applicable requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively, solve problems, and foster positive relationships with students, families, staff, and community partners.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree with a Major in Occupational Therapy from an accredited institution recognized by the A.M.A. for a four and one half year program.
- Licensed by the Board of Allied Health Professionals.
- A minimum of one year experience with children under close supervision, preferably in a pediatric setting.
- Demonstrated ability to consult with teachers and parents regarding treatment.
- Experience with 766 writing and the Team evaluation process.
