Description
SUMMARY
Under general direction, is responsible for evaluating and treating consumers in order to facilitate
rehabilitation and independence in daily living skills of physically and/or mentally disabled
consumers. Duties and activities may vary based on assignments and program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties and responsibilities of the Occupational Therapist will include, but are not limited to
the following:
- Evaluates consumers referred to program to establish learning and performance
capabilities and develops a treatment plan to attain established goals working within
scope of consumer's disability. Evaluation includes activities of daily living (feeding,
dressing, grooming, hygiene, transfers), fine motor and gross motor skills, sensory
awareness, perceptual motor skills, homemaking and independent living skills.
- Develops a treatment plan and goal based on assessment.
- Selects educational, recreational and social activities in order to aid consumers in
adjusting to their disability and teaches adaptive skills necessary to perform daily living
and/or vocational tasks.
- Participates in in-service education for other patient care personnel relevant to techniques
and objectives of program.
- Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings and annual reviews as required by each
program.
- Integrates therapeutic intervention techniques into programs or home of person served
through consultation with parent/guardian and staff at team meetings, case conferences or
through other informal contacts.
- Documents therapy activities and results on consumers' records, assists in overall
evaluation and rehabilitation of consumers' medical/psychiatric condition by conferring
with social workers, nurses and other clinical staff.
- Records progress on all active cases in therapy, monitors therapy status, and makes
appropriate recommendations as changes occur.
- Refers consumers to other clinical services if such referral is felt appropriate.
- Designs, makes and fits adaptive devices for consumer use such as splints, shoes or
braces.
- Trains and instructs program staff as required.
- Assists with other duties i.e. arrival, dismissal, feeding, bathrooming, classroom
management.
- Provides supervision to students and Occupational Therapy Assistants as needed.
- Maintains equipment and orders supplies as required.
- Performs other related duties as requested.

- Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
- Good interpersonal skills are required in order to interact effectively with employees, coworkers, consumers, their families, other programs, outside contacts, etc.
- Due to sensitive nature of the position, must be able to maintain the strictest
confidentiality.
- Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks.
- Good organizational skills
- Good oral and written communications skills
- Analytical ability necessary to evaluate consumer's condition and progress and select
appropriate therapy techniques.
- Manual dexterity to operate tools
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Master's in Occupational Therapy.
- One year of prior Occupational Therapist experience preferred
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
Current NY State license in Occupational Therapy
Salary Description
$41.17/hour
