Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose

The primary purpose of the Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management Office is to develop and manage comprehensive environmental health, safety, and emergency management programs for the University.

The primary role of the Occupational Safety Manager is to provide comprehensive workplace safety programs and oversight in support of the University's mission. This includes conducting building inspections, job hazard analyses, and accident investigations; providing safety training; evaluating and updating safety policies and programs; maintaining applicable records; and serving as primary liaison to university safety committees and external occupational safety agencies. The Occupational Safety Manager works with individuals across all areas of the University to ensure safe working and learning environments. This position also supervises the Safety Coordinator role.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, industrial engineering, biological or physical science, or related discipline.
  • At least 3 to 5 years of related experience.

License/Certification Required Preferred Qualifications

  • CSP or related certification
  • 3-5 years of experience as a safety professional, conducting building inspections and accident investigations, providing safety training, developing policies and programs, and performing a variety of additional duties related to occupational health and safety.
  • 1-3 years of supervisory experience

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The primary role of the Occupational Safety Manager is to provide comprehensive workplace safety programs and oversight in support of the University's mission. This includes conducting building inspections, job hazard analyses, and accident investigations; providing safety training; evaluating and updating safety policies and programs; maintaining applicable records; and serving as primary liaison to university safety committees and external occupational safety agencies. The Occupational Safety Manager works with individuals across all areas of the University to ensure safe working and learning environments. This position also supervises the Safety Coordinator.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

Program Management

  • Develops and manages an effective occupational safety program under the general guidance of the Assistant Director, in support of the Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management mission.
  • Develops new policies and programs to address new or evolving trends, best practices, or to ensure compliance.
  • Provides training using a variety of platforms to include in-person and online.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of training programs.
  • Remains current on industry trends and make appropriate changes to program areas of responsibility.
  • Coordinates with other industry professionals, consultants, and vendors to provide appropriate occupational safety services on campus.

Technical Expertise

  • Conducts building inspections, job hazard analyses, and accident investigations.
  • Recommends and implements appropriate procedures to address safety concerns.
  • Provides technical information and expertise to university constituents on occupational safety.
  • Provides consultation on safety matters related to facilities planning and construction projects.
  • Reviews and updates safety policies and programs in relation to occupational standards and regulations.
  • Provides training and educational resources on occupational health and safety.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Understands and effectively communicates hazard analyses, reports, and other investigative findings to a community with varying levels of health and safety knowledge.
  • Communicates corrective actions in an effective manner to various entities and individuals across campus.
  • Formulates written and verbal reports to communicate findings, recommendations, and corrective actions.
  • Serves a leading role on the University Health and Safety Committee.
  • Works closely with the University's Leave Management Administrator to develop strategies for preventing accidents and injuries and reducing the frequency and costs of worker's compensation claims.
  • Serves as liaison with external occupational safety agencies.
  • Develops appropriate reports for a wide range of internal and external audiences.

Supervisory

  • Provides guidance and effective supervision to employees reporting to this position.

Ability to lift and carry educational, training materials, ladders and other equipment. Ability to provide in-class, simulated instructions to variety of campus personnel. Able to stand/sit for extended periods, drive vehicles, and occasionally work in challenging weather conditions.
