Purpose of Position
The Nursing Supervisor leads the SHS Nursing Department in the mission of College Health Nursing Practice. The Nursing Supervisor participates on the leadership team and accreditation team. The Nursing Supervisor functions as the infection Control Lead and also coordinates mental health care of UND students.
Duties & Responsibilities
Supervise Nursing Department
Lead nursing department in the nursing process to provide developmental-level, culturally sensitive, and diverse patient-centered medical and mental health care to students within the UND community
Assure Nursing Department meets professional standards of care while practicing within the Nursing Scope of Practice
Schedule and facilitate nursing department meetings
Coordinate nursing schedule
Identify staffing needs, with approval from Administration, is responsible for hiring of nursing staff, new nursing staff orientation, and annual nursing staff performance appraisals
Support and encourage opportunity for staff professional development
Support and establish practices to successfully retain accreditation by the American Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC)
Annually, and as needed, review and revise Nursing Policy and Procedure Manual, Medical Standing Orders, Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
Prepare and monitor nursing department budget
Order and purchase medical and pharmaceutical supplies
Monitor cost of goods sold and adjusts per SHS fee schedule procedure
Participate in annual fee schedule review
Participate as a member of the SHS Leadership team
Assist Provider in evaluation and treatment of patients
Practice within professional, ethical, and legal parameters, maintaining strict patient confidentially 100% of time.
Provide nonjudgmental care and sensitivity regardless of race, gender or culturally diverse attitudes.
Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Maintain accurate electronic health record (EHR), interview patients, record vital signs, review and update medication list and allergies.
Administer treatments and intravenous (IV) therapy as ordered by the medical provider.
Perform preliminary procedures for FAA/ATC, ROTC, GYN, and physical exams.
Prep patient for procedures, obtain appropriate signature on informed consent and ancillary surgical documents, provide appropriate pre and post-procedure care and education.
Assist with surgical, casting, and splinting procedures.
Assist in referrals to other specialties as directed by medical providers. Arrange for emergent transfer to an acute care setting and transfer of appropriate records for continuation of care, adhering to FERPA & HIPAA guidelines.
Utilize standing orders to administer treatments, medications, vaccinations and to order appropriate lab and x-ray studies.
Order T-Spot testing, per standing orders. Arrange Public Health follow-up of latent TB clients per medical provider order.
Prepare specimens for lab analysis, utilizing knowledge of Blood Borne Pathogens and adhering to infection control guidelines in all procedures.
Dispense and fit crutches; Instruct patient on correct usage.
Perform audiometry, vision, or additional tests when indicated or by provider order.
Perform peak flow testing and nebulizer treatments.
Provide emergency services during hours of clinic operation (CPR, First Aid, AED).
Triage Patients and be included in the rotation of the late/triage nurse schedule.
Provide care for patients not seen by a medical provider in various methods such as in-person, by phone, and/or electronically
Perform general nursing procedures within the scope of nursing practice to address clinic needs
Provide assistance to Immunization Compliance Officer to assure Measles/Mumps/Rubella, Meningitis immunizations, and Tuberculosis screening requirements are in compliance with North Dakota University System policy.
Mental Health Coordinator
Serve as SHS case manager for SHS providers, mental health providers, and mental health patients
Schedule and facilitate case management meetings between SHS providers, psychiatric providers, and UCC providers
Facilitate, with UCC, integration of Psychiatric Doctoral Interns into SHS medical practice
Oversee psychiatric telemedicine practice
Educate and enhance patients' knowledge of psychiatric conditions
Infection Control Lead
Assure clinic practices are compliant with AAAHC Infection Control Guidelines
Assume responsibilities of SHS Exposure Control Officer
Establish written procedures and training program related to communicable disease
Develop, maintain, and update exposure determination list
Develop and administer any additional related policies and practices, in coordination with the Office of Safety, necessary to support the effective implementation of the Exposure Control Plan (ECP), and remain current on all legal requirements concerning communicable diseases
Solicit input from employees, who are potentially exposed to injuries from contaminated sharps, in the identification, evaluation, and selection of effective engineering and work practice controls, and document the solicitation in an addendum to the ECP. Identify the changes made when updating the ECP
Act as a liaison during Office of Safety inspections and conduct annual programs audits to maintain an up-to-date Environmental Compliance Assessment Protocol.
Maintain an up-to-date list of department personnel requiring training; develop and implement a training program through the Office of Safety; maintain class rosters and copies of training material, and annually review the training program for compliance with this policy
Review and update the ECP annually with the Office of Safety on or before January 1 of each year
Ensure that a copy of the ECP is accessible to all department employees
Assist in reporting exposure incidents to the Office of Safety using the Incident Reporting and Incident Investigation Report forms
Other duties as assigned
Maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality at all times as per FERPA and HIPAA guidelines
Oversee medical equipment maintenance and repair (BioMed)
Participate in opportunities, clinic and campus wide, to enhance the educational experience and success of UND students
Community involvement
Within professional scope of practice, perform other duties as assigned to meet the needs of Student Health Services and the UND community
