About 5 South Cardiac Acute Care Unit

The 5 South Cardiac Acute Care Unit is a 46-bed medical telemetry unit specializing in the care of cardiac and medical patients. The unit treats a wide range of conditions, including:

• Coronary Artery Disease
• Acute Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack
• Heart Failure
• Cardiac Arrhythmias
• Pneumonia
• Other acute cardiac and medical conditions

Twenty-five patient rooms are equipped with bedside cardiac monitoring technology to support the care of patients requiring more advanced observation and intervention. The unit also provides telemetry and intermediate-level care for patients recovering from cardiac procedures.

Position Summary

As a Nursing Assistant, you will play an important role in supporting the healthcare team and providing exceptional patient care. Under the direction of licensed nursing staff, you will assist with daily patient care activities while helping to ensure a safe, comfortable, and healing environment.

Responsibilities:

• Provide direct patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN, including activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, turning, repositioning, and transporting patients.
• Perform UPMC Nursing Assistant core responsibilities, including vital signs, weights, intake and output, point-of-care testing (including blood glucose monitoring, specimen collection, Foley care, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, patient safety and Hospital-Acquired Condition (HAC prevention measures, and Ticket-to-Ride documentation for patient transport.
• Observe patient conditions and promptly communicate changes in patient status to the RN.
• Assist with restraint placement, monitoring, removal, and diversional activities in accordance with physician orders and hospital policy.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized patient care environment by completing safety checks, changing bed linens, cleaning unit equipment, stocking supplies, and ensuring hallways and patient care areas remain free of clutter.
• Acquire, stock, and distribute supplies and equipment necessary for patient care, including performing messenger functions and setting up equipment within the scope of the Nursing Assistant role.
• Deliver patient nourishment, fill water pitchers, distribute mail, and assist with meal tray service.
• Respond to call lights, telephones, patient requests, and other unit needs in a timely manner.
• Document patient care activities and observations accurately in the medical record according to established procedures.
• Complete clerical and administrative functions as needed by the department.
• Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department and assist in maintaining unit readiness.
• Provide one-on-one observation, supervision, and companionship for patients as assigned.
• Respond appropriately to emergent situations within the scope of the Nursing Assistant role.
• Communicate effectively and professionally with patients, families, visitors, and members of the healthcare team.
• Demonstrate respect for cultural diversity and contribute to a workplace that promotes safety, professionalism, collaboration, and mutual respect.
• Develop and maintain productive working relationships through accountability, teamwork, enthusiasm, and commitment to patient care.

• Comply with all hospital policies, patient confidentiality requirements, infection prevention standards, safety procedures, and bloodborne pathogen protocols.
• Adhere to all policies and practices related to patient care and hospital operations.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant training programKnowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA preferred.
• Work permit required if under 18 years of age.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

• CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
