Nurse Unit Manager

The Nurse Unit Manager provides leadership and oversight to nursing staff while ensuring quality resident care, appropriate staffing coverage, and efficient management of medical supplies and equipment. This position supports the nursing department through staff supervision, scheduling coordination, staffing management, supply ordering and inventory control, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams. The position functions within the scope of practice under the supervision of the Director of Nursing.

What will I do as a Nurse Unit Manager with Genacross?

  • Provides primary direction to the professional direct care staff (RNs, LPNs and STNAs) on assigned unit/floor/wing to ensure effective care is provided to residents.
  • Partners with Human Resources in staff attraction and retention efforts, including hiring, on-boarding, coaching and counseling, and performance management.
  • Participates in resident admission process to determine appropriate services are available.
  • Maintains infection control program, policies and procedures.
  • Oversees doctor rounds and wound treatments for the residents.
  • Assists in the coordination of nursing services with ancillary services through the ministry department heads.
  • Provides primary direction to Charge Nurses and CNAs on assigned unit/floor/wing to ensure effective care is provided to residents.
  • Maintains responsibility for current and next shift staffing levels; manages call offs.
  • Prepares, maintains, and posts nursing schedules in compliance with organizational policies and staffing guidelines.
  • Works to fill vacancies and secure staffing coverage as needed.
  • Approves or coordinates shift trades, pick-ups, and schedule changes in compliance with policies.
  • Assists with approval or denial of PTO requests for nursing staff.
  • Schedules floor training for new nursing staff.
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining staffing levels and position control compliance.
  • Assists DON in accurate attendance and absenteeism records in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Prepares and tracks orders for medical supplies and equipment, including stocking and putting supplies away, while staying within the approved budget guidelines.
  • Maintains inventory levels to ensure resident care and staff operational needs are met.
  • Distributes and stores supplies and equipment in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Tracks owned and leased equipment and coordinates returns or replacements with vendors as necessary.
  • Inputs invoices and assists with departmental budget tracking and spend-down monitoring.
  • Maintains organized supply storage areas and monitors usage trends to minimize waste and shortages.
  • On-call responsibilities for Assisted Living and Health Center.
  • Oversees and reviews the daily, weekly and monthly resident charting (MARS, TARS, etc.)
  • Investigates allegations of abuse/neglect and reports, as appropriate, to proper organization leadership, authority, professional boards, etc. as required.
  • Reports hazardous incidents, including but not limited to, injuries, equipment, etc. to the appropriate Manager/Supervisor.
  • Implements and follows disaster plans in the event of an emergency.
  • Participates in committees as assigned i.e. QAPI, Care Conferences, and Risk Meetings.

Nurse Unit Manager Requirements:

  • Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN or ASN) preferred.
  • Current State of Ohio LPN or RN License required.
  • One to two years of experience in nursing supervision preferred.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to learn new software application as required by the position.
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact with senior executives, managers, supervisors and direct care staff, as well as residents, families and physicians.
  • Understands directions; communicates and responds to inquiries promptly.
