This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) - Office of Mental Health, G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital, 220 Faison Drive, Columbia SC 29203.

As the Nurse Supervisor, Institutional / Permanent Charge Nurse working under supervision of the Nurse Supervisor, you will provide direct patient care and assist in planning, coordinating, assigning and evaluating nursing care in a designated area. You will cross-train and float to other lodges as needed. This position requires the ability to work with all genders in the Adult, Child, and Adolescent populations.

Responsibilities for the Nurse Supervisor, Institutional / Permanent Charge Nurse include:

  • Function as a Charge Nurse for assigned shift. You may assume role of Nurse Supervisor (Area Manager) as assigned in his/her absence; supervise, instruct, and evaluate nursing personnel in the treatment and care of adult psychiatric patients including those who have co-occurring disorders and the maintenance of the therapeutic milieu according to DMH-DIS Policy and Procedures, Standards of Care, and age-specific criteria and interventions.
  • Provide direct nursing care to patients by identifying obvious symptoms of physical and emotional illnesses through observations and record analysis; complete on-going nursing care assessment and formulates plan of care for each patient which includes patient education and discharge planning utilizing age specific interventions. Participate and provide supervision of the preparation and administration of patient medication; participate and continually monitor this process. Complete nursing assessments as needed.
  • Support and actively participate in the Nursing Performance Improvement activities.
  • Participate, support, and abide with SCDMH Employees Performance Management System and Standards of Disciplinary Action.
  • Maintain clinical competency by attending and qualifying in all mandatory training classes (EX. MAPS/MANDT, CPR, SCIES Modules, cross training and age specific criteria) and 20 hours of non-mandatory training yearly.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse by the SC Board of Nursing.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds; ability to see, hear at normal volumes, stand, walk, reach, pull, stoop, bend and climb at least two (2) flights of stairs. Ability to tolerate noise level and circulate in patient areas for long periods. Must be able to work with repetitive patient behaviors.
  • Must be able to work beyond scheduled hours as required to meet safe staffing standards/regulatory requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.

Post hire, employees must:

  • Have the ability to perform MAPS/MANDT and emergency care.
  • Be able to establish and maintain confidence and cooperation of patients and families.
  • Be able to work with limited supervision.
  • Successfully complete all in-service training.
  • Be able to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationship with employees.
