An oncology nurse navigator is a professional registered nurse with oncology-specific clinical knowledge who offers individualized assistance to oncology patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome healthcare system barriers. Utilizing the nursing process and oncology nurse navigator standards, an oncology nurse navigator provides education and resources to facilitate informed decision making and timely access to quality health and psychosocial care throughout all phases of their care. All services are provided under the direction of a provider from the oncology care team.

Essential Sensory Requirements

  • Hear patients in person and on the telephone and be able to verbally respond.

  • Potential exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, body fluids, needle sticks and other conditions common to a medical clinic environment.

Education

  • Graduate of a school of nursing - Required
  • Bachelor''s Degree - Preferred

Work Experience

  • 2 Years - Hospital or clinic nursing experience - Required
  • 1 Year - Previous Oncology and/or Navigator experience - Preferred

Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) - State Licensure/Or Compact State Licensure - State Licensure/Or Compact State Licensure in state, depending upon designated work location - Required within 90 Days
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Required within 90 Days
  • Oncology Nurse Navigator-Certified Generalist (ONN-CG) - Preferred within 3 Years

Travel Requirements

  • Must be able to travel between various system facilities and off-site locations as needed. - Required
  • Completes patient assessment, identifies specific patient needs, and addresses barriers to care
  • Provides education and resources to patients and their family
  • Coordinates appointments and referrals
  • Facilitates shared decision making
  • Develops relationships with referring physicians and ensures follow-up and treatment plan is communicated
