Position Overview

The Nurse Manager of Behavioral Health is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of an inpatient Behavioral Health unit, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered psychiatric care within an acute care hospital environment. This leadership role provides operational oversight for staffing, clinical performance, regulatory compliance, quality outcomes, and patient satisfaction while supporting continuous unit operations.

The Nurse Manager works collaboratively with hospital leadership, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams to maintain behavioral health standards of care and achieve organizational goals.


Key Responsibilities

Behavioral Health Unit Leadership

  • Manage daily operations of a 53-bed inpatient Behavioral Health unit
  • Oversee 24/7 unit functionality including staffing, scheduling, and workflow coordination
  • Ensure safe staffing ratios and effective resource allocation
  • Supervise multidisciplinary teams including RNs, behavioral health technicians, and charge nurses

Clinical & Quality Oversight

  • Ensure delivery of high-quality psychiatric and behavioral health nursing care
  • Monitor patient outcomes, safety metrics, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Maintain compliance with Joint Commission standards and hospital policies
  • Support evidence-based psychiatric care practices for adult patient populations

Staff Leadership & Development

  • Participate in recruitment, onboarding, performance evaluations, and corrective action processes
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, and professional development opportunities for staff
  • Support leadership coverage through oversight of charge nurses and nursing supervisors
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and clinical excellence

Patient Care Coordination

  • Support interdisciplinary care planning for adult behavioral health patients
  • Promote collaboration across medical, psychiatric, and support services
  • Maintain a safe therapeutic environment for patients with acute psychiatric needs
  • Oversee crisis intervention protocols and patient safety initiatives

Operational & Administrative Management

  • Monitor unit productivity, operational efficiency, and fiscal performance
  • Develop staffing schedules and coordinate resource planning
  • Collaborate with hospital leadership on strategic behavioral health initiatives
  • Ensure continuous operational readiness of the department

Required Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license (Florida or compact license eligible for Florida licensure)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 30 days of hire
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required within 30 days of hire
  • CPI (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention) certification required within 90 days of hire
  • Minimum 3 years of inpatient Behavioral Health nursing experience in an acute care hospital setting
  • Minimum 3 years of leadership experience in roles such as Charge RN, Nursing Supervisor, Assistant Nurse Manager, or similar
