    Controller – Nonprofit Organization


    Controller Position Summary


    We are seeking an experienced and mission-driven Controller to oversee all accounting and financial operations for our growing nonprofit organization. Reporting to executive leadership, the Controller will ensure the integrity of financial reporting, maintain strong internal controls, oversee budgeting and compliance, and provide strategic financial guidance to support the organization's mission. This position is responsible for leading the day-to-day accounting and finance functions while ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, and regulatory reporting.


    Key Controller Responsibilities


    Financial Leadership



    • Oversee all accounting and finance operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and cash management.

    • Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

    • Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.

    • Develop and maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies.

    • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to executive leadership.



    Budgeting & Forecasting



    • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department leaders.

    • Prepare financial forecasts and cash flow projections.

    • Monitor organizational performance against budget and provide variance analysis.

    • Identify opportunities to improve financial performance and operational efficiency.



    Grant & Fund Accounting



    • Oversee grant accounting and reporting to ensure compliance with donor and funding agency requirements.

    • Monitor restricted and unrestricted funds.

    • Ensure proper allocation of expenses across programs and funding sources.

    • Prepare financial reports for grantors and board presentations.



    Compliance & Audit



    • Coordinate the annual financial audit and serve as the primary contact for external auditors.

    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

    • Prepare and support Form 990 filings in conjunction with external tax advisors.

    • Maintain compliance with nonprofit financial reporting requirements.



    Controller Qualifications



    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.

    • 7+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including leadership responsibilities within a non-profit.

    • Experience in nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, and grant management strongly preferred.

    • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting.

    • Experience managing annual audits and regulatory compliance.

    • Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with ERP/accounting systems.

    • Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership abilities.

    • Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution.
