Native Education Liaison

Days/Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 2:30 PM (Flexible hours as assigned to meet program needs)

Job Summary

The Native Education Liaison contributes to Hoquiam School District's mission of fostering meaningful relationships, engaged learners, adaptive pathways, and community connections by serving as a vital link between the district and Native American students and families. This position develops and implements cultural and academic programs, ensures students have the resources to meet state standards, and fosters a deep sense of pride and belonging within the school community.

Key Responsibilities

Meaningful Relationships

  • Establish and maintain positive, authentic relationships with students, parents, school staff, and the local Native American community.
  • Facilitate effective communication between Native American families and school personnel, serving as a bridge to strengthen home-school partnerships.
  • Collaboratively organize and facilitate Parent Advisory meetings to ensure family voices are central to the educational process.
  • Assist school personnel in understanding the cultural and environmental factors that impact Native American students.

Engaged Learners

  • Develop and implement educational and cultural programs that meet the needs of Native American students in alignment with state academic standards.
  • Coordinate and implement programs and activities that increase awareness and instill pride in Native American history, traditions, and culture.
  • Attend workshops, conferences, and meetings to maintain current knowledge and bring innovative engagement strategies to the district.
  • Provide a positive role model for students, encouraging academic persistence and cultural identity.

Adaptive Pathways

  • Collect academic data and maintain required documentation and files to monitor student progress and ensure program efficacy.
  • Prepare and submit grant applications (such as Title VI) in a timely manner to secure funding for student support.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and organization in managing time, including making home visits and working across various district buildings.
  • Maintain knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations regarding education and social services to ensure students are receiving all entitled support.

Community Connections

  • Knowledgeably connect families with community social services and resource agencies to address barriers to student success.
  • Promote district pride by ensuring the school environment reflects and respects the heritage of the local Tribes.
  • Act as a representative for the district in community meetings and tribal functions to strengthen regional partnerships.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgment when navigating sensitive community and family matters.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Must meet at least one of the following three options:

  • Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education.

  • Obtained an associate's (or higher) degree.

  • Met a rigorous standard of quality through a formal state or local academic assessment (demonstrating knowledge of reading, writing, and mathematics).

  • Experience working with diverse cultures, preferably local Native American Tribes.

  • Experience working with families with low economic status preferred.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong organizational, clerical, and computer skills.
  • Effective human relations and communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and participate in professional development.
  • Ability to collect data and maintain accurate, detailed record systems.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid Washington State Driver's License.
  • Type II driving permit (or willingness to obtain one).
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

Working Conditions

The Native Education Liaison works in both office and school settings, with frequent travel between buildings and for home visits. The position is exposed to some outside climatic conditions during winter and summer months. Noise levels are generally low to moderate. Regular attendance, punctuality, and the ability to work flexible hours as assigned are essential.

Salary: $26.82 - $28.46 an hour

Benefits: This is not a qualifying position to receive benefits or retirement.

Employment is contingent upon successful clearance of a Washington State Patrol, FBI fingerprint criminal history background check, and Sexual Misconduct background check.
