Position Summary
The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive officer of NAMI Alabama, providing visionary leadership, operational oversight, and strategic management to advance the mission of the organization: improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness through education, advocacy, support, and public awareness. The ED is responsible for ensuring organizational effectiveness, growth, and sustainability, serving as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors, staff, affiliates, partners, and the public. The ED takes direction from and is accountable to the Board of Directors.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership & Organizational Management
- Develop, implement, and evaluate the strategic plan in partnership with the Board.
- Provide leadership to staff, ensuring effective operational management, staff development, and accountability.
- Serve as the public face of the organization and represent NAMI Alabama in local, state, and national forums.
- Foster a culture of excellence, diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization.
Measurable Goals/Objectives:
- Quarterly review of KPIs and update strategic priorities with measurable outcomes.
- Conduct quarterly staff performance reviews aligned with individual and organizational goals.
- Maintain high staff retention rates (>90%) through effective leadership and support.
2. Fundraising & Resource Development
- Lead fundraising efforts to diversify revenue streams, including grants, individual giving, corporate sponsorships, and events.
- Develop and implement a sustainable fundraising strategy aligned with organizational priorities.
Measurable Goals/Objectives:
- Achieve annual fundraising targets as approved by the Board (e.g., increase total revenue by 15% year-over-year).
- Secure at least 3 new major grants annually.
- Increase donor retention by 10% annually and cultivate 20 new major donors per year.
3. Affiliate Development & Membership Growth
- Support and expand local affiliates to enhance statewide reach and program delivery.
- Implement strategies to increase membership, particularly among young adults and minority communities.
Measurable Goals/Objectives:
- Increase total membership by 10% annually, with measurable growth in young adult and minority engagement.
- Assist in establishing at least 1 new affiliate or support affiliate capacity building annually.
- Conduct 2-3 membership drives annually targeting underserved populations.
4. Educational Programming & Staffing
- Oversee the planning, delivery, and evaluation of NAMI educational programs and support services.
- Recruit, hire, and manage qualified educational and program staff.
- Ensure programs maintain NAMI fidelity standards.
Measurable Goals/Objectives:
- Deliver at least 50 educational programs annually, including NAMI Basics, Family-to-Family, Peer-to-Peer, and Ending the Silence.
- Achieve participant satisfaction scores of ≥85% in post-program evaluations.
- Hire and retain qualified educational staff with a maximum vacancy period of 90 days.
5. Public Relations & Communications
- Serve as spokesperson for NAMI Alabama, cultivating media relationships and public awareness.
- Oversee marketing, social media, and communications strategies to enhance visibility.
Measurable Goals/Objectives:
- Increase media coverage and social media engagement by 20% annually.
- Launch 2-3 major public awareness campaigns per year targeting priority populations.
- Maintain consistent brand messaging across all communications platforms.
6. Board Relations & Accountability
- Report regularly to the Board of Directors, providing updates on operations, programs, finances, and strategic initiatives.
- Provide recommendations and implementation strategies for Board-approved initiatives.
Measurable Goals/Objectives:
- Present quarterly progress reports with measurable outcomes based on KPIs.
- Implement Board feedback within 30 days of recommendations.
- Maintain strong Board satisfaction with leadership performance (≥90% positive feedback annually).
Qualifications
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, public administration, social work, psychology, or related field (Master's preferred).
- 5+ years of senior management experience in a nonprofit organization, preferably in mental health, advocacy, or human services.
- Proven fundraising experience with demonstrated success in securing grants, corporate sponsorships, and individual donors.
- Strong financial management, strategic planning, and organizational development skills.
- Experience hiring, supervising, and developing staff.
- Excellent communication, public speaking, and relationship-building skills.

Salary adjustments and merit increases will be directly tied to the achievement of these KPIs, as determined by the Board during the annual performance evaluation process.
