Position Title: Music Teacher Secondary (Grades 6-12)

Reports To: School Administrator

Term of Employment: 10 Months/Year

Benefit Type: Part-Time (approximately 20 hrs weekly) - non benefited position

Salary: Commensurate with Sussex Academy Teacher Salary Schedule (Based on verified teaching experience and certification)

Position Overview

Sussex Academy is seeking a dynamic and student-centered educator to serve as a part-time Music Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. This position plays an important role in fostering creativity, self-expression, and a lifelong appreciation for music while supporting the academic, social, and emotional growth of students.

The Music Teacher will provide engaging and standards-aligned instruction that develops students' musical knowledge, performance skills, and artistic confidence. Through classroom instruction, performance opportunities, and collaboration with colleagues, the successful candidate will help create meaningful learning experiences that inspire students to explore their talents, experience the arts, and excel both inside and outside the classroom.

Primary Responsibilities

Instruction & Student Learning

  • Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned music instruction that promotes creativity, musical literacy, and performance skills.
  • Develop lessons that expose students to a variety of musical genres, cultures, instruments, and artistic experiences.
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation and growth.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs and abilities of learners.
  • Assess student progress and use data to inform instructional decisions and support continuous improvement.
  • Integrate technology and innovative instructional practices to enhance student learning and engagement.

Student Performance and Program Development

  • Prepare students for performances, showcases, and other opportunities to share their musical talents with the school community.
  • Promote student participation in music-related activities and enrichment opportunities.
  • Assist in the continued development and growth of Sussex Academy's music and performing arts programs.
  • Support school events and initiatives that celebrate student achievement and artistic expression.

Collaboration & Professional Learning

  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff to create interdisciplinary learning opportunities and support student success.
  • Communicate effectively with families regarding student progress, classroom activities, and performance opportunities.
  • Maintain positive relationships with students, families, staff, and community partners.

School Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate records related to student attendance, grades, and assessments.
  • Supervise students and fulfill assigned school responsibilities as needed.
  • Utilize instructional technology, student information systems, and other educational resources effectively.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional learning opportunities, and school events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by school administration.
  • Supervise students in classrooms and during school-related activities, including arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, and other assigned duties.
  • Administer state and local assessments in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Utilize instructional technology, student information systems, and learning management platforms to support teaching and learning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of the Elementary School or school administration.
