POSITION PURPOSE

Under the supervision of the Director of Multi-Lingual Learners, an ML Specialist contributes to the development, coordination, implementation, and on-going evaluation of the ML Program in Alamance-Burlington School System. They support the Regional Office Staff, Principals, Curriculum Facilitators, and Teachers. The ML Specialist provides or assists in the coordination of staff development, consultation, and program development for schools serving Multi-Lingual Learners in grades K-12.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in an applicable field for applicable level(s)
  • Prior successful classroom experience
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of K-12 World Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) English Language Proficiency Standard Course of Study
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities

CERTIFCATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must hold a valid Teacher's License issued by the state of NC in applicable field and for level assigned
  • NC Teaching License in ML/ESL K-12 Education
  • Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • National Board Certification
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across multiple sites with multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience with curriculum and sequencing of early English language development integrated with content areas.
  • Spanish Speaking

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to the development, coordination, implementation and on-going support and coaching of instruction for MLs.
  • Works closely with the ML Director and other ML Department colleagues on the curriculum, instruction, resources, non-instructional tasks and related best practices needed for the implementation of the LIEP and ML Department Goals in ABSS.
  • Provides leadership and program development while working closely with the ML staff to improve instructional practices in the ML classroom.
  • Update, discuss, and plan the upcoming areas of general and specific focus for each assigned school and teacher, etc.
  • Works with ML staff to implement a coherent content-based ELD curriculum aligned with state and WIDA standards.
  • Promotes the use of consistent instructional framework and research based strategies.
  • Develops and leads professional development for ML teachers and content teachers as needed.
  • Models instructional strategies for teachers and staff in the classroom.
  • Provides training and coaching feedback/support for classroom teachers through the SIOP model.
  • Supports and coaches new ML teachers with scheduling, classroom resources, instructional and non-instructional best practices.
  • Participates in regular professional development to improve knowledge and skills.
  • Provides supports for schools in the absence of an ML teacher.
  • Researches resources and provides guidance on how to use those resources.

WORKING CONDITIONS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force. Substantial amount of time spent standing and/or walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees in this position are required to work in indoor and outdoor environments, and come into direct contact with ABSS staff, students and the public.
