Mitigation Specialist (Case Manager) - Part Time

Starting Salary range: $23.7738 - $26.1532 per hour

Location: Bloomington, IL

Schedule: Part time, less than 20 hours per week

The McLean County Public Defender''s Office is seeking a compassionate, organized, and motivated professional to serve as a part-time Mitigation Specialist. This position plays an important role in supporting clients involved in the criminal justice system by helping identify social, emotional, mental health, and community resource needs that may impact legal outcomes.

The ideal candidate will have strong communication and case management skills, an understanding of social services and community resources, and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds in often sensitive situations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide mitigation advocacy and case management services for clients
  • Conduct client interviews and develop biopsychosocial histories
  • Assist attorneys by gathering background information relevant to negotiations and sentencing
  • Prepare oral and written reports for attorneys assigned to cases
  • Serve as a liaison between the Public Defender's Office and community service providers
  • Maintain accurate records and confidential information
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or a related field

Preferred:

  • Licensure in Social Work or a related field
  • Experience working within the criminal justice system, social services, behavioral health, or case management

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with the criminal justice system and community resources
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information
  • Ability to effectively interact with clients, attorneys, service providers, and the public
  • Strong organizational and conflict-resolution skills
  • Proficiency with standard office software and equipment

Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver's license required
  • Ability to travel to various agencies, detention facilities, and community locations as needed

Work Environment

Work is primarily performed in an office or detention facility setting, with occasional travel throughout the community. This position requires professionalism, discretion, and the ability to work with individuals experiencing challenging life circumstances.
