AZA accredited, Miller Park Zoo is the 13th oldest zoo in the US. Located in Miller Park in Bloomington IL. It is administered by the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Bloomington. Miller Park Zoo covers approximately 4 acres.

Miller Park Zoo Seasonal Zookeeper - Part Time

This is technical work performed under supervision in the care and maintenance of live animals and plant collections at Miller Park Zoo.

Examples of Duties

• This list may not include all of the tasks and/or knowledge which may be expected of the employee, nor does it cover all of the specific duties which may be required. Other duties may be assigned.
• Perform the routine husbandry of captive wild and domesticated animals including cleaning of exhibits and enclosures
• Use chemical cleaners according to instruction
• Assist in the construction of small animal exhibits and enclosures as directed
• Prepare diets and complete feedings according to established procedures
• Compile and place orders from suppliers to fulfill dietary requirements
• Perform routine handling and/or control of said animals
• Observe and report the condition of sick and/or injured animals; assist in or provide the treatment of said animals according to the instructions of the Animal Care Manager, the Consulting Veterinarian or other authorized personnel
• Observe and report on maintenance needs of buildings, enclosures, grounds, and equipment; perform minor maintenance task; assist in the setting up of animal exhibits; seasonal maintenance tasks including but not limited to snow removal, leaf removal, etc.
• Provide enrichment activities for designated animals
• Maintain computerized records of animals.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of:

• Animal husbandry practices
• Materials, tools and equipment used in zoological park

Skills:

• Possess excellent public relation, organizational and communication skills
• Must be self-motivated and outgoing

Ability to:

• Give and follow oral directions
• Be comfortable with both working in a team and completing tasks individually
• Work in any of the animal areas assigned regardless of the tasks at hand
• Interact courteously, respectfully, and productively with supervisors, fellow employees, zoo visitors and general public
• Remain on your feet for long periods of time

Education/Experience: High school Diploma or Equivalency

Certificate or Licenses: Must possess valid Illinois Driver's license.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Required to work in all types of weather conditions and be able to lift at least 50lbs on a regular basis.

Minimum Age: 18

Experience Required

Prefer to have previously had animal care internships and/or animal care experience in an animal related field.

Perks

PTO - One (1) hour of sick leave will accrue for each 40 hours worked by the seasonal employee. Employees are eligible to use sick hours after 90 days of continuous service. Employees may accrue up to 16 hours for every year of continuous employment, with a maximum balance of 40 hours. Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) Pension - enrollment if you have worked or intend to work more than 1,000 hours in a 12-month period. Salary

$17.51 Hourly
