HELPING KIDS GET ON TRACK
We are looking for reliable enthusiastic coaches to join our team for the Spring Track Season.
The Track Coach helps lead a fun, safe, and developmentally appropriate track and field program for middle school participants. The coach teaches fundamental running and field event skills, promotes teamwork and sportsmanship, and encourages youth to build confidence, fitness, and character through participation in track and field.
This position supports the mission of the YMCA by strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Plan and lead engaging practices for middle school track participants
- Teach basic techniques for running, relays, jumping, and introductory throwing events
- Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and positive character development
- Prepare athletes for track meets through drills, conditioning, and skill development
- Ensure a safe environment, including proper warm-ups, hydration, and injury prevention
- Provide encouragement and instruction for athletes of all ability levels
- Communicate clearly with participants, parents, and program staff
- Assist with set-up and breakdown of track equipment and practice areas
- Follow all YMCA safety policies and youth protection guidelines
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must have a valid drivers license and a clean driving record
- Must be reliable - punctuality is a non-negotiable
- Previous track and field experience, coaching or participation
- Experience working with youth ages 11-14 preferred
- Ability to teach basic running mechanics and event fundamentals
- Positive leadership and ability to motivate young athletes
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends during the track season
Hours:
Track runs 4-5 days per week for approx. 9 weeks with some meets at other area schools. Practices are held at Scotch Plains middle schools.
Pay:
The rate is $20.25 per hour.
