Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the Middle School English Language Arts Teacher facilitates student success and growth in literacy, critical thinking, communication, and interpersonal skills through the implementation of the district-approved English Language Arts curriculum. The teacher creates a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment that supports the diverse academic, social, and emotional needs of middle school learners while fostering a love of reading and writing.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong knowledge of middle school literacy instruction, New York State Learning Standards, differentiated instructional practices, and the use of formative and summative assessment to inform instruction. Experience supporting a diverse range of learners, including students with disabilities and English Language Learners, is highly desirable.

The teacher is expected to collaborate effectively with grade-level and content-area teams, special education and ENL staff, school counselors, and administrators to plan instruction, analyze student data, implement interventions, and promote student achievement. The position also requires maintaining accurate records, communicating regularly with students and families regarding progress and expectations, and contributing positively to the school community through ongoing professional collaboration and continuous improvement.

Essential Performance Responsibilities

• Plans, implements, and evaluates standards-based English Language Arts instruction aligned with the New York State Learning Standards and district curriculum.
• Develops engaging lesson plans that promote reading comprehension, literary analysis, vocabulary development, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills.
• Creates a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment that fosters student engagement, intellectual curiosity, collaboration, and respect for diverse perspectives.
• Differentiates instruction and provides appropriate accommodations and modifications to meet the diverse learning needs of all students, including students with disabilities, English Language Learners, and advanced learners.
• Uses a variety of instructional strategies, educational technology, and evidence-based literacy practices to maximize student learning and achievement.
• Administers and analyzes formative, benchmark, and summative assessments to monitor student progress, inform instructional decisions, and provide timely feedback to students and families.
• Collaborates regularly with grade-level colleagues, Special Education co-teachers, ENL teachers, literacy specialists, counselors, and administrators to plan instruction, review student data, develop interventions, and support student success.
• Participates effectively in co-teaching partnerships by collaboratively planning, delivering, and assessing instruction using inclusive instructional practices.
• Maintains accurate and timely records of student attendance, grades, assessment data, and progress in accordance with district policies and applicable state and federal regulations.
• Establishes and maintains high expectations for student behavior while implementing effective classroom management practices that promote a positive learning environment.
• Encourages meaningful communication and partnerships with parents and guardians to support student academic and social-emotional growth.
• Participates in instructional team meetings, faculty meetings, curriculum development, and other collaborative initiatives to improve instructional practices and student outcomes.
• Selects, utilizes, and maintains appropriate instructional materials, classroom resources, and technology to support English Language Arts instruction.
• Administers New York State English Language Arts assessments and other district assessments in accordance with established testing procedures and security protocols.
• Engages in ongoing professional learning to remain current on best practices in literacy instruction, adolescent learning, educational technology, and curriculum development.
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Building Principal or designee.

Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices in middle school English Language Arts, including reading comprehension, literary analysis, writing instruction, vocabulary development, grammar, speaking, and listening.
• Knowledge of the New York State Learning Standards for English Language Arts and best practices in curriculum development, assessment, and literacy instruction.
• Knowledge of differentiated instructional strategies, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) to meet the diverse academic, social, and emotional needs of students.
• Knowledge of effective assessment practices, including the use of formative and summative assessments, data analysis, and progress monitoring to inform instructional decisions.
• Knowledge of instructional technology and learning management systems used to enhance teaching, learning, collaboration, and communication.
• Knowledge of applicable federal and New York State laws, regulations, and district policies related to education, student privacy, special education, and English Language Learners.
• Skill in creating an engaging, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment that promotes critical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication.
• Ability to develop and implement rigorous, standards-based instruction that supports the needs of diverse learners.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with grade-level teams, Special Education and ENL staff, school counselors, administrators, and families to support student achievement and well-being.
• Ability to establish positive relationships with students and families through effective communication and collaboration.
• Ability to use educational technology, student information systems, and digital resources to support instruction, assessment, and communication.
• Ability to analyze student performance data, reflect on instructional practices, and adjust instruction to improve student outcomes.
• Ability to maintain accurate records, manage multiple responsibilities, and organize work effectively in a collaborative school environment.
• Commitment to continuous professional growth, reflective practice, and active participation in professional learning communities and school initiatives.

Qualifications Profile

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required; Master's degree preferred.

Education

• Valid New York State certification in English Language Arts (Grades 712) is required.
• Candidates must meet all New York State certification and fingerprint clearance requirements.

Experience

Successful prior teaching experience at the middle school level preferred.
